Journey to the Center of the Silence

By horatiuromantic on April 17, 2022 11:54 pm

Welcome! Have a seat, fasten your g̶̫̘͛̏͂l̷̪̊͝ḯ̶̜̹̣̲͛͑t̸̢̘̟̮̹̉̄́ć̵̼̿̈́͋͝ḫ̸̳͕́͐̉͜ͅ and get ready for a journey aboard the intergalactic transphantomatic aetheroplane, destination: known unknown. Please, no drinks.

Headphones / bass speakers recommended for full immersion!!!

This track was born from a few weird experiments. First of all, I found this crazy piano out in Copenhagen and sampled it. Then I created a wacky setup in AUM on ipad with the Samplr app which allows you to do weird stuff to samples, the retro piano from audiokit which I just bought cause it's on sale (from 2 dollars lol), as well as experimenting with some drum machines also on sale (for 1 dollar yay): DrumLab and DM2 (but ultimately I ended up using DrumComputer cause I found the others to be too harsh). Also on the screen was the FlyTape 2 tape machine where you can sort of glitch out the signal and perform the glitches somewhat. But the top of it all, I found a complete silence sample in my folders and I was like wat? then I normalized it and it turned out to be this crazy organ-like drone, probably some background noise of the room I recorded with my nice Røde NT2 so I used that as the bassline, supplemented by some bassalicious 2. I may have forgotten something but I don't think so. All of it recorded today.

Once I had all this set up I started performing it live, going back and forth to the samplr thing, wiggling the effects, while hitting some piano hits. I wanna get better at improvising vocals, this is one of my attempts to do so.

This really was a journey. I'll admit to laughing out loud when you said "Nothing that can't be solved with a good THUMPING". lol

I didn't know where we were going. But I was seated and ready for departure. And then the beat kicked in...

Oh man, I love this. Such a good way to kick off a trippy mixtape.

huh, just a random piano
I like what you did with it, found music that gets yet another chance at music

Oh man, I love this. One of my fondest memories as a kid was going to a planetarium where they had this light show with a really cool auditory experience, and this takes me back to that feeling of being fully immersed in sound and feeling like I was transported somewhere else. This is the kind of thing that really inspires me to take a crack at field recording but I don't know where to even begin.

Fantastic use of found sound/objects, and AUM. Gotta hit up some of that iPad software if it's on sale.

every week a new surprise. You are such an enrichment for my musical horizon and inspiration.
This track is an unbelievable trip. I love the dubby style, that reminds me of the ORB. The piano samples are phenomenal and support the track very well. Another cool funfactor is the title.... well done, sir.

A real journey and some cool sounds.  Nice you were able to get something out of that piano.

Haha! Thank you so much! That's nice that you felt like a proper journey! I didn't expect it would be so effective big_smile glad you liked the Thumping.

Ahh that's a cool throwback! I haven't really had any experience like this but I feel like I know them from hearsay and snippets, like 5 minutes in a museum or from movies and stuff. I feel like it's a funny situation to be in, even as simple as being stuck in an airplane seat for hours with people going around fetching you hot towels and snacks. On field recordings, for example one of the sounds in this track is literally nothing. deep -60db silence normalized and it makes a bass detuned G sound with glitches. So I guess anything and everything can be turned into music with the right context!

Thanks! Funny story today I have a friend who said he knows this piano and has messed with it!

You are so kind! Thank you so much, it's humbling to hear because I feel the same about your music tbh!!! I don't know the ORB, is it the trippy electronica 90s duo?

I'm happy with this track but not at the level to release it elsewhere yet. Still, I feel like I'm getting way way closer to feeling comfortable releasing something this year already, so I am not putting any pressure on it but for sure I'll announce it here if/when I decide smile thanks for the encouragement in that direction!

Thanks! a good friend keeps telling me I'm a good storyteller. I am not sure about that but I'm trying to live up to the hype hahah big_smile

so awesome to hear you just talking, i absolutely love it.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHH THE BEAT DROP, did not see that coming.  lol, just love your random running commentary on this, it's actually hilarious.

This is so much fun! You ARE a good storyteller. Thanks for the ticket for the journey.

I really like the storytelling, this picture is awesome as well.

nice and meditative, chill journey.

Thanks! It was kinda easy to make altho it took a few takes until I was comfortable speaking and even here you can hear the awkward shining through XD

THANKS! and welcome, welcome...

Thanks! The picture is cool but it doesn't match at all what I imagine goes with the music. For me it's more gloomy cyber piano glitch, and a nondescript spaceship airline seating scheme with the listener in a random seat in between some other ppl hahh

the awkward is the best part!

This is so wild!  Love it dude.  Such a eerie, twilight zoney vibe going on.  Love when the drums come in, they resolve so much tension.  Cool vocals too, love the spoken word thing.  I have a spoken word kind of track I did awhile back too that this kind of reminds me of.

That is an epic looking piano. With just a little refurbishment and a couple of gears, it would look just perfect for a steampunk setting. Beautiful weird track - the big wobbly layers really help with the surrealism of it all. the spoken words add to the ambience. What a weird trip!

This is another one of my favorites of yours to add to that genius song (you know the one I raved about it in the comments). I really really love the sounds here -- something very acoustic while also very clearly sequenced, something kind of off-the-cuff w/ the vocal delivery, but consistent and rather serious in the treatment of the material: a kind of a consistent meta-play of contrasting concepts. Really enjoyed listening and thinking, very grateful for the room to think. (Also: shared it w/ the dev of one of the tools you mentioned using, which I'm really delighted for getting to do, that's such a good feeling!)

Thanks! I wanna make more in this style, but it's quite energy taxing so I gotta find the good time for it.

Thanks! True, there's sometimes a pimped up piano like this used as a visual element in bars or places. But most often you're not meant to play them. This one is playable which makes it cooler than all the steampunk ones big_smile Glad you had a good trip!

Haha, I'm so glad you liked it and thanks for the lovely words! I'll sometimes look back at the comments and this kind of stuff really brightens my days when I come across, so thanks big_smile

What tool/dev are you talking about? Tell them I say hi and thanks for the good work big_smile I'm also a developer but haven't succeeded making much in the music/audio space. Only VR games so far tongue
