I Only Care About You

By horatiuromantic on July 23, 2022 4:40 pm

I came up with this song while on the back of an elephant in a colorful room inside a big tent in a dream within a dream last week. The person I was singing to had already sang me something and it felt a bit like a friendly competition - there were multiple people (or dream creatures) apart from the person I was singing to, waiting to hear what I was going to respond in song. I improvised the first two verses and part of the chorus a capella pretty much as you hear them here! I am not sure who the person was, but I think she was a girl and I definitely cared about her!

I liked how it turned out and I woke up in the first dream to try and write it down, but I couldn't find a pen, but luckily I woke up again in REAL LIFE and I wrote it down on my phone! Then I spent a week trying to record a decent version, but I didn't finish it last Sunday so I gave it an extra week cause I thought it deserves it. I hope you like it!

Oh yea, about the process: I tried a few things including SessionBand and other backing tracks, but in the end I recorded a first draft piano+voice to get a tempo track, then I used Staffpad to write drums and tempo-map them since there's a few places where it needs to slow down and speed up. Then I did a million takes of piano, voice, and bass in Logic, and used the fanciest of UA Spark effects to master it. Hopefully it's not too compressed, I'd like to hear your thoughts if you have any constructive criticism on the mastering.

Enjoy!

Really cool! I've always been fascinated with the idea of trying to retrieve songs that were written within a dream and bring them into reality. Congrats on doing so! Turned out to be an excellent smooth, jazzy ballad.

I'm pretty sure this song was for that elephant! They love music, probably would like this song!

Beautiful, elegant, romantic~

This is so much fun. I love how free it sounds - you have a real knack for capturing that in your tracks.

Haha maybe!!! I love playing music to animals! I’ve only done it to cows or sheep, or dogs cats fish that kind of house animal… but elephants would be a big honour to perform for!

Thank you! The freedom works best for songs I wrote, but it’s harder to wrangle when I’m doing other ppls compositions smile but I appreciate you saying that!

Yayyy thx! I had it easy with the bass and drums but still glad the final result is up to par! Best decision I ever made is to get those good studio monitors

Thank you! I know I’ll be performing this one again!

Wow that piano is really delicious. I get a classic black and white vibe of this track. A jim jarmush vibe. Something intimate, simple, true, imperfect in a perfect way.
