Dog Bossa

By horatiuromantic on January 30, 2022 2:24 pm

This is a song about Cheddar, the dog. Mac, his owner, is not playing with Cheddar but is playing VR where he is walking a virtual dog.

I made this song for Global Game Jam 2022 for our game, Mac and Cheddar. You can play it here for free:

This track can loop endlessly because it needs to in the game! I don't know if it does in fact get annoying after a while but I tried to make it in a way that is more hypnotic than annoying, by using the beat and keeping solos simple but interesting.

I made the music starting from a bossa drum beat using DrumComputer on iPad which is also able to do random fills. I didn't use that feature much in this piece but it plays random fills about every 4-8 bars. It also has mostly electronic sounds which I don't usually like but I managed to get something nice out of it this time, perhaps a bit loud. I coupled it with a bassline in Bassalicious 2 that established the harmony and then I jammed on it with the piano until I found what seemed like a fitting melody. In hindsight, I think I much prefer coming up with a melody or phrase first, and then build the track from that, because it's harder the other way round. But this was a good learning experiment and it was still fun jamming on the track. Finally I added some FM 2 classic DX strings and the mellotron clone app flute to give it the weird solo and chord hits, to create a sense of progression through the song.

Nice man, definitely a fun jam here.  Love the epiano solo.  I can totally see this as video game music, this is perfect.

I like them changes

The game made me laugh as soon as I bowled Mac over. Dig the track! Must be hard to keep hit that sweet spot for music in a game like this, where it's consistently fun without being annoying or overwhelming. Feels like you got it.

Thanks! Some of those tunes we make are kinda dope, what would be cool I think maybe I'll try it one of those weeks, is share a backing track version and hope that someone else picks it up and does a solo over it in the following week

Nice! Thx for playing big_smile

Oh Cheddar!!  How good are game jams?  Damn it's been years since I did one of those.  Really like way this bops around.  Also the slight modulation on the rhodes is super fun -- has this got some kind of tape sim over it too?  Sounds like wow and flutter on the master bus.  Do like!

Woof

jams r da best! I think it's mostly a preset of the House piano and I used a bit of mod wheel on one of the parts in the solo.

What may be crazy but might have affected the sound a little bit is that I had to record the song through ipad out into fl studio in with a shitty audio cable because garage band wouldn't export the strings part from one of the plugins but it was fine when playing back in realtime. but this most likely did something to the sound since it got converted back and forth. anyway I couldn't really tell the difference and I am guessing you are talking about the epiano sound. but I thought this is kind of a fun story big_smile

I don't think I'd get tired of this! Looking forward to checking out the game

Fun and bouncing song, I like this flute part!

Pretty comfy jam

this is so nice

This puts me in such a good mood!

This is very sweet sounding. I can totally picture it in-game.

You asked what GGJ stuff I did, thought this would be a place to reply!

https://globalgamejam.org/2022/games/circle-8 (did music for this one)

and

https://globalgamejam.org/2022/games/mutualy-assured-construction-4 sound design for this one.

Love the catchiness of this, the looseness of the piano part. The drum pauses are remarkably effective, also! heart

Fun tune! Nice changes and dig the flute
