Dialogue With Demon

By horatiuromantic on March 20, 2022 11:45 pm

In this piece, I attempt to summon and have a dialogue with a demon. It goes as you could expect, when it comes to demons.

I had an uninspired week so I did this fully in the last few hours of Sunday. It was a busy week I guess. I've been reading 1Q84 by Murakami, it's nice. I think it seeps thru this piece a bit.

As for the process, I used acoustic piano sound plus mirack on the ipad. I used a slew limiter to generate some data from my piano playing (filtered with a low pass so I can have two versions: the bass notes and the general playing). This value I fed into a bass drone tuned using a little keyboard on the ipad so I can switch it while playing, then I tweaked minor stuff while performing. Then I did a couple of versions to see what happens. It's an interesting effect to have something reacting a bit more indirectly to your playing, I'll for sure explore some more in this direction.

Enjoy!

A beautiful introspective improvisation. The low frequencies in the reverb make the track obscure and interesting while listening. awesome piano playing skills once again.

Thanks! The reverb and the sound of the bass synth that responds to the playing are more subtle in the track compared to what I experimented with. I wanted them to be prominent like an additional voice, but not to the point of chaos like it often gets when I mess with modular. It's more like a tamed demon, or rather a devious one that doesn't want to show its face...

Oha! Now I see what it is all about. Thank you.

it's so elegant~

Your piano playing is beautiful.  I love the emotion in this song.  I had this on repeat all day today while I was working.  Great job!

Oh wow, this caught me right from the bat with the piano playing. I really like the tone there, the playing is elegant and tasty. By the way, what did the demon have to say?
