Rag Dub

By Homeostatic on March 1, 2026 11:38 pm

This week I wanted to try out some dub techno.
I started out with some keys into a reverb+delay and kickdrum and was pretty happy with it but then struggled a bit to add elements that made sense. I got something thrown together in the end but the flow was never really there.

The Sample was picked mainly because some folks on the discord suggested Toys/playing as a theme, its a clip I found on archive.org of a radio show from the 30s. It feels kinda spooky in this context so I went with that.

The other intersting (to me) thing for this week was the drums are made and sequenced in VCV rack and then I actually went to the trouble of making a multitrack output and routing it around in reaper for mixing. I learned a fair bit about how to do that kinda of routing in reaper but I don't know if the extra effort really imporved the mix very much.

I love this haunted circus kinda feel! Very eerie!

"Haunted circus" is exactly right! While the speech sample was intended to be lighthearted, against the sparse minor chords, it takes on a sinister vibe. Nicely done!

I like the uncertainty of the meter as the instrumental lines come in--it's appropriately ragged, and then comes together.

You had me at dub techno!

Love the feel of this. Dub has always had a sinister feel to me, and I like how it takes on a slighter lighter feel with the techno elements. Also great combo of the sample and the chords. Haunted circus indeed!

Pennywise soundtrack, excellent atmosphere!

This has got some serious nightmare energy.

I started the week with something chill in mind, but once I found the sample it became obvious the track wanted to go dissonant so just let it. Thanks for your comments!

Super cool stuff. I have no idea how you find those cool samples (archive.org, but how big_smile ) that seem to be working perfectly with the thing you're making

I would love to hear longer version with maybe bit more punchy drums
