The Waves of Regret

By hent03 on January 20, 2022 6:49 am

Here's something simple and chill to float away with. It could do with a little variation in the drums and the bass line, but that's something to think about in future weeks.

The title is from "The Diving Pool" by Yoko Ogawa (translated by Stephen Snyder). She's one of my favorite authors, and the last line of this paragraph is just wonderful, both in terms of imagery and translation:

"As I traced his profile with my eyes, I realized that I could never ask anything of him again: not caresses, not protection, not warmth. He would never dive into the pool inside me, clouded as it was with the little girl's tears. The waves of regret were gentle, but I knew they would ripple on forever."

(You can probably tell, but I'm making an effort to read more. So far so good!)

It's really pretty and has a nostalgic vibe to me.  I could see relaxing to this at bedtime.

Sweet tune. I like that little drum groove you made. This is the year of me returning to my roots, so I'm also trying to read and write more. I'm glad to hear you're finding time to do that in your life. You still write, right? ha

I like how the first half is nostalgic, but I feel the second part is lighter, with acceptance. I have been a bit primed by the description, though. The soundscape is nice, warm and fluid. I like the melody you introduce at 1:40 and repeats through the song, and how the track changes at that point. There is a lot of subtlety in this track, I enjoyed it a lot!

Love the little click tones with the round bass and washy key sound.  Also a very poetic bit of prose!

Peaceful simple starting, and the layers and feeling grows slowly. It's another perfect song to relax smile

So chill, love this.  Quite fitting for the writing that inspired it too.  Well done.

Wonderful atmosphere, I really like this one smile

I'm also trying to read more this year, have some books to finish and some more to start. Less reddit tongue

Very smooth. I like the soundscape and agree that music fits the title of the track.

I also did a track about regret, albeit less tear/wave feeling. Another interpretation, thank you

very pretty

Thanks! It's around that time I usually make my music, so there's probably an influence.

Thanks for the kind words on the drums. Still a weak point for me, particularly when I'm using the Deluge. And yeah, I'm still writing. Have gotten about 50k words into a novel, hoping to finish it this year.

The titles and the music have no direct connection, but I imagine there is a connection between the art I consume and the art I try to make. Really happy you enjoyed it!

You are probably the reason I enjoy clicking sounds when I make music.

That was something of a happy accident, but I like it when the two things intersect.

Thanks, guys!

Hahaha, that's hilarious but awesome!  smile

Sweet and chill smile Nice work man.

Thank you for this smooth song in rough times. That is doing me good.

Somewhat less poetic.

I rarely read fiction, but do put a lot of effort when I write lyrics, so I really appreciate you sharing words to set the tone for your music!  I really get more out of it than just hearing the track alone.  As your description set the tone, this music felt like a single tear falling...

Werd.

I dig it. I get some nostalgic breakup vibes. It tells the story perfectly and it makes me think about how well music transcends all, and this track with pretty straightforward synths does the job as well as some complicated jazz I'd try to consume obsessively some years ago. Also it helps that you read, and thanks for sharing that beautiful passage

Love the laid back vibes.  I could drift away to that chord progression for even longer.  Excellent work!

wow, this is so fantastic
