a breath with substance

By hent03 on February 18, 2022 5:46 am

I wrote a short story about sighs, and the sort of people who collect them. The first three lines are true, the rest is fiction. You can read it here if you are so inclined. I put a snippet below, which is where the title comes from.

"Sighs seem like such simple things on the face of it. A breath in, followed by a breath out. What even separates a sigh from an ordinary breath, you may wonder. There are of course scientific explanations, but they are often dry and uninteresting. They focus on the act as if it is a release valve for a complex machine, which, to be fair, it is.

To my mind, however, a sigh is a breath with substance. It carries something beyond its mechanical functionality. We put some small part of ourselves in each one, and then we attempt to expel it. Sometimes we are successful, but more often we are not. We sigh again. As our feelings change, so too do our sighs."

I like the background story and how you take elements of the day to day life and look at them through a new lens, giving them attention, and highlighting the dimension they have.

I like the wobbly sound here, like air shimmering. Very nice relaxing mood.

The main synth has a really nice texture to it and I like the contemplative mood it creates. I also like your description of sighs in the excerpt.  I bookmarked the story so I can read the whole thing later this week.

Wow, I had to re-listen because I went somewhere else the first time though.  Very hypnotic, lots of dimension and movement without having to be loud and overly complex.

This ambient sounds as what you feel when you sigh. It's still unsteady emotions after, but you can relax now. Always lovely smile

I feel like I gained new insight reading about the concept behind the song and the song itself has me relaxed, taking deep and slow breaths. It almost has the opposite effect, like rather than expelling emotion through a sigh, taking a deep breath is like trying to bottle it and keep it safe.

This is lovely, especially combined with the story. Your writing is always a pleasure to read my dude.

Beautiful trance-like experience man. Your definition of a sigh is also very inspiring to read.
Its stuff like this that really inspires others to think a little more introspectively

very substantial subject. It fits perfectly to reflect your thoughts while listening to your beautiful track.
so lovely done this week.

The atmosphere in this is so nice and calming.  I can feel those exhales in the keys.  It has a "life flashing before your eyes" feel to it.

Very enjoyable amount of space within the mix. Air.  Lovely writing as always.

I appreciate the depth of this song and will respond with a hearty, contemplative sigh.

The resonances build on one another as they ring out to this special little atmosphere you create. I like your choice of sounds.
