Melange

Every week I feel like I'm trying to rush the musical development of my song, so this week I decided to let the song go slower and develop over a longer time. I started with an idea of a Jean-Michel Jarre style song, so I played with the FM synth until I found a nice bass instrument with a good amount of texture. Then I went looking for an instrument for a melody and ended up with @impbox 's FMHANG, which led me to research what a "hang drum" is, which led me to listening to lots of hang/hang drum/handpan music and then play with that a bit in this song. Then I got the idea that people were dancing around, stomping on the ground, clapping along and just having a big jam, so I worked on that a bit.

Then I ran out of time before I was able to develop any of these ideas enough to be happy with them. Although I actually had a few hours of totally free time scheduled over the weekend to work on this, all of that fell through and I had only enough time to get this rendered and posted. I don't really like the melody, I don't think my "foot stomp" actually sounds like a foot stomp. I need several more phrases and an outro.

But I do like some of the ideas in here and think that with some more time playing, something good would eventually come out of it. So this song just ends up in my list of ideas to improve upon in the future. Sorry for the abrubt ending on it--I didn't have time to throw on something better even.

The bass is cool and I like the lead, though. Based on the first listen, I feel the stomping should be slower & heavier: maybe take a bunch of similar low sounds and mix them together into a BLLPAAAHH sorta sound, then render that to be heavier and more complex. The JMJ influence is showing, too! heart

This works pretty well as an ambient piece, honestly! The brassy synth and the lead sound pretty good, as well as the subtle plucks (maybe those could be a tiny bit louder!)

oops, i gotta catch up on your work!  i hear you about running out of time.  i liked where all the ideas took your mind, good fodder for future weeks!
