the finale in three acts

By george bowles on December 29, 2024 5:43 am

for the last week, i really wanted to make a high quality track to represent all that i've been working on.

i stuck to my guns which have been the arturia drumbrute impact, the korg monologue, and the hydrasynth explorer. I wanted to employ all or most of the mixing and editing techniques i've learned this year, and throw in a few tricks here and there. it's mostly performative but also has a composed cinematic feel, with dramatic pauses and shifts and all of that. i was really trying to nail the mix and master and i feel pretty good about how it sounds, nothing like Ozone or automatic mastering used whatsoever. a bit unique mix-wise and both in the chicago school of post-rock and in industrial and even film score qualities. enjoy! i hope to catch up on all the tracks i've missed in the new year so I'll be leaving more comments on your tracks probably!

actually this mastered a little too quiet, needs a little more work, but just crank it up a little bit

I see you're doing this week what I've done last week, which is a sort of summary of the year. Your work goes far more into experimental territory than my bread and butter sounds, so I like the Drumbrute rhythm across the track here that drives the track forward, which I enjoy. It allows for the music concrete elements to shine without being too challenging for me. Sure, the rhythms change, but that's entirely alright. In fact, it makes the piece more interesting.

Those low synth strings in the background remind me of some Twin Peaks soundtrack moments and so this entire song gives an eerie feel of endless cold forests. The drums, the synth, and the experimental noises make for an effective combination. The master is indeed a bit quiet, but nothing to worry about at -16 LUFS. The streaming services ask for -14 LUFS. Many of us here master louder just for Weekly Beats, for instance this week my track's -11.5 LUFS. Last week I went even louder with -9.5 LUFS because the heavy AAC HE2 compression I used seemed to sound better that way. Tracks like mine might make it seem like you should be mastering louder, but it's actually not necessary to get to a "sausage" waveform, especially for your kind of music. -16 LUFS is fine.

Thank you so much for your feedback! I need it

I usually master stuff too loud if anything, so this came as a surprise to me. I think I got absorbed into mixing details and depth... I really enjoyed your interpretation of how my track sounds creatively!
