sitari - they replaced the magic with machines

so, back in high school one of my best friends got me into weird music and being a musician. he was a year younger than me but much more knowledgeable on music and probably a lot of other things too. he's a big reason i started playing guitar and writing electronic music.

fast forward decades, and he has slowly trailed off being a musician, to the point a few years ago he didn't really do it any longer. on the flipside, i have slowly become an all out musician in a variety of styles. last year though, my old friend started playing acoustic guitar for his students in Cambodia, where he teaches English now (he moved over seas to teach English years ago, and has lived in Prague, Korea, Thailand, and Cambodia).

then this February, he actually fired up his Impulse Tracker software and wrote this track and asked me to collaborate on it somehow. since his style is quite a bit different than mine, and this is his comeback track, I didn't alter it drastically. I basically just became the "mastering engineer" for this and did subtle things with it.

I wanted to do more, but the idea came to me sort of the last minute, and I didn't have a lot of time to work with.... which is fine, because I'm not sure I would have brought much to the table for this. it's pretty cool as is.

his idea is to write a tiny album in one track based on the theme of the title of the track. it's not one of his best works, but it is pretty good for someone who had not programmed electronic music for a decade (he used to do it all the time).

so this is not only an overseas collab from Cambodia to Illinois, it is an homage to an old friend and fellow musician. i also used to use impulse tracker quite a bit and was my introduction to sequencing electronic music before I went all in with FL Studio in the late 90s and haven't looked back.

This was really quite unexpected. The introduction and the more "beat" based part, and then the contrasts after that are quite stark, but they work pretty well all together.

For someone who is "rusty," this is remarkable. Faved.

yeah, I really wish this guy would devote himself to music because he is really really good at it. like i said he is a key reason why i make music and a good, old friend. he realizes though there is not a whole lot to gain from making music which is why I think he doesn't do it more. and yeah, the structure is a little odd but I think it works in a bookends manner. he used to do hundreds of tracks like this and he'd have little sci-fi story narratives for most of them. we were also in an industrial band together along with a singer, which was my first band, in the mid 90s.

Wow, very nice track. I have a similar story with one of my childhood friends/musician buddies, we were a band together at one point, but he's drifted far from it and I've gotten more into it... he used to be the 'more musically talented' of the two of us, and I wish he'd get back into the game... this was a really interesting, well produced track... very much enjoyed it.

The diversity in there is astounding! Dense, deep and very cool stuff. I like how the end draws a bow to the beginning. Congrats to you and your old friend!
