Old Ways Are Dying

By george bowles on April 21, 2024 5:15 pm

this track started as an experimental guitar noise track, but somehow morphed into a shoegaze song.

I didn't have time to polish up my shoegaze song, so what you hear is of somewhat rough demo quality, but maybe a tick above a rough demo. I want to add demo and edit the bass parts more, but the noise guitar (which is me de-stringing some old strings that have been on my guitar since just after covid happened, through a bunch of fx pedals)....

after the noise guitar, I added in some analog synths and made them sound more shimmery in post production. I had bought the drum pack from Kellii Scott of Failure (hands down one of my favorite drummers, especially for alternative rock sounds) and just got goofy friday night and dropped a random drum track that was part of the pack, and I thought it synced up quite well with what I had already done with guitar and synth.

and then it really came together when I added the bass line saturday morning! This definitely turned out to be a 4/20 track! wake n bake with some cold brew and sativa bass playing, with some late night stoned-all-saturday mixing and mastering. I will come back to this and finish it up when I have an album of songs like this, maybe do all the vocals in a session or two. got a ways to go on that!

thanks again for listen, appreciate you all and this sonic journey we are on in 2024! p.s. there is a ambient noise intro to this song! to be on the album. it's just too long of a song already, presented at 224 kbps heh.

I like how this descends into noisier and noise territory, but still keeps pumping with that rhythm to keep it together. Cool stuff!

Dude, the song is really good, the bass kicks ass!  It has a droning yet propulsive trajectory.  This would sound awesome with vox.
I think the guitar part should be louder and have more treble, maybe in stages as the song progresses, overdubbing the parts with some spatial fx and mixing to make it huge!  The bass and kick drum cancel each other about a bit at points, I would side chain the bass or lower the volume and compress again, the first idea would be better to keep it unnecessarily loud...
Overall, it is an impressive track from you in a genre I haven't heard from you lately; I think it could be really great with some touch-ups and additions!

Hell yeah good ideas! I especially like what you said about the guitar... I think I will make it ebb and flow and become a bigger part of the song. And light bass editing and eq'ing is definitely gonna happen! I know I gotta lower the frequency on the bass where the kick hits. I just ran out of time.

Lot of 90ies Indiepunkrock going on. This was my time of youth. And all kind of memories pop up. Sebadoh, Sonic Youth, MBV, …the beat has a joy division drive to it. A strong A++.

You tend to upload long songs, so I had to laugh when you said the duration is limited by the 16 MB upload limit big_smile

This one goes into your typical noise mayhem territories, but with the added bassline and drumming there is indeed a faded polaroid shoegaze feel to it that I like. And the noise itself is well controlled so it's never grating.

In short, a good enjoyable shoegaze groove. Nice!

ah thank you so much for the kind words and for checking out my track! I am trying to hear everything on random but I do my best, I've only heard just over half the tracks probably! I appreciate your feedback
