Nebulous Peril - Dissenter

By george bowles on August 4, 2012 12:28 am

wanted to concentrate on some other stuff besides the sitari - botanimal album for the next few weeks. I'm a little worried that I won't get to finish the Nebulous Peril album since I might move and not have access to Marshall stacks, etc for a bit.

I bought a double bass pedal in the hopes that I might be able to do more of a technical death metal thing, but the learning curve is much steeper than I thought it would be. I think I can still do faster blast beats with one foot than two (a la rich hoake of brutal truth). Anyway, since I'm not all that good of a drummer, I decided to bite the bullet and try to do some in depth drum programming, well as in depth as a less than three minute song would allow without being too ridiculous.

also wanted to do something a little more crazy time signature wise for this project. what I found out is that it is not very easy to play guitar along with a robot on drums playing 7/12. since I have limited time this week moreso than usual, I had to go with these takes on guitar. not super bad, but a little bit sloppy. by mixing it a certain way I was able to make it sound a little better in that regard.

the thing didn't fully come together until I put the vocals on... then it made a lot more sense in my head. another thing with time constraints... couldn't do a bunch of vocal takes. going to be out of town all weekend. so with all those disclaimers and whatnot out of the way, turn it up and rock out!!! pure metal fury.

\m/ !
Also, deadly HEXI-KICKS??!

Yes.  Bring da metals.  I really hope I get round to doing a metal track.  I dig the chaotic guitar sound.  Check out Portal if you haven't.  I reckon you may dig it.

Cool track, george. Vocals always ruin grindcore and death metal for me.. can never really understand what the dudes are saying so it just sounds like RUH RUH RUH RUh and rarely has any melody of note. anyways.. I replied to your comment on my track ;>

my main challenge for this was playing guitar with the latency issue I was experiencing. had to play slightly ahead of the beat, you can kinda tell this in the beginning but I think I corrected it before too long. this is better than I remember it being.

pretty sweet man! been awhile since I've listened to stuff like this so I spent the first 30 seconds trying to acclimatise. plus I played your song after hearing a funk track. but yeh, good job.

thanks yall

re: latency issues. I recently discovered the best way to work with this was to mute EVERYTHING, except the click. Then I record myself so I can only hear the click and the dry strings of my guitar (goes for bass and electric). Seemed like an inconvenient way to play at first: Not being able to hear the track and not being able to hear how the guitar sounds through the amp simulator stuff) but it means I pay a lot more attention to my timing and playing and it means the final recording is out of synch by a specific amount, so I can just slide the whole take over a bit and hey presto!

Can't think of a better way to do it unfortunately, especially for intricate stuff.

thanks! interesting method
