Drops of Want and Need in a Time of Waking

Hey, Weeklies. Thanks for stopping by.

This week's submission is taking me out of hardware a little bit (although there was a microphone involved) so that I can focus on writing lyrics and singing.

This was a challenging song. I had never used a vocoder before, so learning how to properly program it was fun. I also wrote the song and performed it without having an idea about how the song would ultimately be finished. I did fall back generally on the key that I sang the song in, generally in A minor/C major. But I also performed the song at a slightly slower tempo than the song ended up, which also created some unique production challenges.

All of this is to say that I would loved to have spent more time diving deeper and working on this song more, but this month is all about speed to delivery for me. So this is what I am submitting for this week.

Thanks for listening! heart

Cool deep vibes-textures.

Very relaxing.

Serene and intelligent, and the vocals feel quite human and organic for a vocoder!

Got any vocoder tips? tongue

This is a lovely soundscape. The synth bell lead is the star out of the box, but I suspect across future listens the vocal will evolve into the star.

it has some laurie anderson vibes

Wow! Thanks so much for your kind words!

If you are serious about your vocoder question, I can tell you that what I did was use the Arturia vocoder vst in this track. So I was able to really dial it in. In addition to this, I layered another vocal track that was also treated, but this was done without the vocoder, which allowed me to find a fun way to mix them together.

Thanks so much for listening!

I know that bell synths can be kind of a simple pull when it comes to synth forward music, I still love it after all this time. big_smile I'm so glad you liked it. heart I really appreciate you giving this a listen!

Absolutely serious question—I've always felt vocoders have a lot of potential, but never found a clear path as to how to get there.  If you have the time/inclination/patience, I'd love to know what “really dial it in" means.  Do you use dial in differently when you know you're going to mix it back into an un-vocoded version?
