The Integral

This week I wanted to try making some soundtrack music to go in the background of a dystopian sci-fi film.

I wanted to try out using some hang samples. I only had a free demo version (20 minute usage limit) of a plugin for NI Kontakt, so I used that to create a loop.

I don't have any big sample libraries of good orchestral and film sounds, so I had to work with what I had. The free BBC Symphony Orchestra VST (Discover) is good, but I quickly found the limitations when I wanted to add some brass. There is almost no variations in sound and performance styles available in the free version, so I had to change tack a bit.

The title of the music is taken from Yevgeny Zamyatin's 1921 dystopian novel 'We' - a must read in my opinion!

I hope you enjoy the music! :]

Gorgeous orchestration, and very effective use of those sample libraries. This is a really pretty piece!

This is amazing - lovely and full, building well and creating some palpable tension. I don't even know where you would have fit a huge brass section in, but I'd be interested to hear if you do some day!

Thankyou! I hope to do more orchestral pieces in the future - I feel I need more practise!

Thanks for the kind words! For the brass I was thinking about a different change of pace at the end with some muted brass swells and stings - alas they aren't included with the free BBC orchestra, so I had to change my idea.
