Pray

This week I had an idea early on that I wanted to write a song. I’d had an idea with a few lines kicking around for a couple of weeks in my notebook. But a couple of lines and a theme doesn’t make a song.
I wanted to write something about how Christians often think that all we need to overcome our problems is to rest more or work harder. But the reality is that sometimes what underlies our anxieties is a spiritual illness or an outright attack by the evil one. That’s when we need to pray for God’s strength and healing to fully trust in Him, no matter what we’re going through.
The Music:
I worked out verse 1 and the chorus fairly quickly, but came up short trying to write verse 2 so it didn’t end up the greatest.
I didn’t have much time to actually put the music together, finish off the lyrics and record the vocals, so it was only at the end of Saturday and on Sunday afternoon. It ended up being about 80% of what I envisioned it to be, so that’s pretty good!
In terms of the inspiration for the music, I started with the drums, taking tempo and style inspiration from ‘Run’ by Alison Wonderland. But it ended up not really being the same drum style. I wanted to re-record the chorus vocals and also tried doubling them, but just opted to keep the original take in the end, imperfections and all.

Verse 1
Come and watch the sunrise
It's been a long dark night
Under attack from the enemy
Feel like giving up the fight
The walls are closing in
You're drowning in the dread
Of all the things you said
So who will find you here?
In your hopelessness and fear?
Only one can overcome
Chorus 1
When your back's against the wall
The giant just won't fall
Though we're wrapped in the physical
The real battle is spiritual
When your heavy arms hang down
Weary and overwhelmed
Though we're wrapped in the physical
The real battle is spiritual
Verse 2
Come and watch the sunset
It's been a long hard day
Rolling my burdens to the King
Seeking the Lord's mercy and grace
The sky is turning red
You're drowning in the guilt
Of things you've left unsaid
Now He will find you here
In your hopelessness and fear
Only He can overcome
Chorus 2
When your back's against the wall
The giant just won't fall
Though we're wrapped in the physical
The real battle is spiritual
When your heavy arms hang down
Weary and overwhelmed
Though we're wrapped in the physical
The real battle is spiritual
When you lift your eyes and pray
The darkness flees away
Though we're wrapped in the physical
The real battle is spiritual
When you lift your eyes and pray
Until the break of day
Though we're wrapped in the physical
The real battle is spiritual
