Last week I switched from Ableton to Logic to see how that workflow felt, and met with mixed results. Some better, some worse. One of the commenters suggested I try sketching/writing in Ableton and then mixing down in Logic, so I did that this time.

On the composition side, the track is still more static than I would like. I am not sure if the "pros" who make this kind of music automate like fiends or just happen to know a few good tricks that get them a lot of dynamic mileage. My guess is a mix of both. In any case, I got some cool moving blips and things, and some nicely tuned toms in the mid section. Next week my goal is to cut down on the number of times a section feels like it is standing still.

I did some mixing in ableton and then bounced each track and all of the sends to Logic, where I did a bit of a final mix and added a bit of compression and things here and there. At this point I really realized how un-scientific my mixing and mastering process is. At this point I am more worried about improving my composition than my mixdown, but it's also pretty critical for techno to have all your frequencies managed properly so that one is going on the near-future list as this challenge continues.

thanks! yeah i really liked the sound of those. I was trying to find something to do to them to give them a little more evolution over time and came up short, but they still sound good i think.
