Sound 8

This is a bit of a sonic experiment, using the first almost-working version of some software I've been developing in Max for about six months. I'm sure it's easy to do, I just don't know how to do it. Anyway, this is a kind of iterative piece, the source material is a recording I took inside a metro train here in Melbourne a couple of months ago. I then played it through the software, then played the next iteration through the software, and so on, eight times. What you hear is an unfortunately noisy version of what I hope are a lot of sounds that are really, really quiet.

Mixed feelings about the results. Obviously it's not clean, but it IS augmented.

Are you aiming at something similar as the RJDJ app, based on PureData? The metro is still there... Looking forward to see where your patch is heading.

I have not heard of RJDJ? So I can't really answer that question. Do you have any more information?

I like the concept of reiteration and the idea of really really quiet.  Fave bit is where the main volume/sound drops away.  The main part almost sounds like a feedback loop upon itself or the 'sitting in a room.... ' concept where the overtones are the remaining elements.

Yes, Lucier's "I am Sitting in a Room" was exactly what I was thinking as well. As I understand it, RjDj is a "reactive music" app, that produces music affected by  outside (real life) events. Like a train ride, for example.

Intriguing concept, looking forward to what's next.

It is quite like that. I was going to do about fifty iterations but that requires patience I lack.

Thanks man. RjDj sounds interesting (Laguna - if this indeed true, then no, that's not what I'm going for). The Lucier analogy is nice, I really love his work and that piece.

Have a look at this general info, and then browse through some Pd / Max forums. I think it could relate to your project in a certain way, at least from a developer's point of view.

Thanks. It's not what my patch is for, but it sounds very cool. I like the idea of environmentally reactive sound production. I remember several years ago when I first got into PD, there was a patch someone made that took the input of your computer microphone (and the ambient noise level of the room) and generated music in real time in response. Maybe that was what became RjDj or something? Interesting stuff though. Maybe I'll do something like that before the end of the year. Thanks so much for the heads up!

Very interesting work here! If you like quirky sound design, there's a crazy little free mobile app called PhonoPaper that uses your phone camera to read music from paper. It can get really weird if you start scanning other things and some of the noises I've been making with it are very cool indeed

Thanks! That app does sound fun. I'll check it out. Thanks for the heads up.

Sometimes, Max gives you... unexpected results, that's also part of the fun. Here, I hear a lot a kind of comb filter fx, I guess it's a natural consequence of the process - or your patch. Might be interesting to have the main frequency of this comb filtering vary. Looking forward to listening to the next iteration(s)(s)(s)...
