so last week, the track i'd been working on kept crashing because of an old plug-in. so this week, i took it as an opportunity to learn about why things crash and how to fix them. thanks to

for the tip about looking at plug-in issues, when following this video i found with different things to try when ableton crashes i was able to disable plug-ins, open the project, and remove the bad plug-in ("bad plug-in! bad!")

so i resuscitated the project and was able to play around with it some more to be able to submit it this week :muscle_emoji:

same as week 2, i started it by sampling the two tracks that allowed derivative work that were submitted closest to my 2nd week track - the one right before, and the one right after. i really liked some of the bass sounds in each, so that's what i built some kind of rhythmic kit around after playing with it for a while.

Lofi Chillhop Beats for Calculating Infinity 2 by XYON provided the awesome down pitched growl that was a beast to try and mix with the low-end

Movement Flow by Aletheia had these great bass plucks that just sounded great to me and also was tricky to mix in. i ended up panning them a bit so the center could be reserved for the kick and deep growl

i've been wanting to make lighter/uplifing music...but this eerie stuff keeps coming up/out, so just going with the flow with that. with the rhythm down, the vibe made me think of maya jane cole and maceo plex so i studied a bunch of their tracks to find out what to add in, and took forever trying to figure out a lead instrument and lead/topline (if that's what it can be called for this weird techno-esque electronica) and how to keep the arrangement interesting.

and then really got to practice mixing and mastering (which i still feel like i have so much to learn). a lot of elements kept getting lost, so i'd either remove them completely, or or really tried to place them in the stereo field and eq them correctly. but my mastering chain was way off and yeah...basically...a lot to learn and practice still. would love any tips!

after the demo(n) held tight to its metallic cavern,
a technologic spell was cast to unleash it back into the world.
it took a fortnight, but once the demo(n) was called out,
it did its thing - probably on a dark, broody, dancefloor somewhere

Love the use of panning at the beginning! Got a great industrial feel, wasn’t expecting vocals on this but was pleasantly surprised, it worked really well, would try modulating the background ARP a bit if I were you, just to keep things interesting, great tune!!

Awesome, glad you got it figured out!  Sweet track too, lots of cool stuff going on here.  I'm a big fan of that riff that starts emerging around 1:30.

thanks for the listen and tip! what ways do you like to modulate an arp? i think i changed this one up by just slowly building out the full melodic phrase, but yeah i didn't modulate the sound itself. would love any tips/advice since i haven't played with modulation much, but i know it can help keep things dynamic, moving, and interesting and not so industrial straight up.

Thanks for the encouragement and support for that one - helps to keep pressing on with these (in the large scheme of things) small set backs.
