(( going back on sun 28 jan to do my 'journal entry' ))
i forget how i started this one, but i think my goal was to try to use my new dubler2 by vochlea. it's a mic that can be trained on your beatboxing to trigger midi, and can capture midi from the pitch of your voice. i'm really excited to get better at that because i'm not classicly trained and don't know how to play the piano, so i'm usually just mouse-clicking on the piano roll or grid. i want to be more expressive and quicker to take the ideas i can hum or beatbox and get them started in ableton.
i think i decided to try a lot of layers on this one too, in order to try to bring in some complexity where i'm usually very basic loopyloopy because of my technical limitations. and then i'm still always wanting to practice mixing and mastering. because i actually started this one earlier i was able to spend more time doing that...and hopefully...the end result...benefitted from that...but i can still hear things i wish were clearer (including the kicks). i'll get there eventually!
i also liked playing with some lfos to do a little sound design too, and just make some weird shit ya know?
oh and re-looking at my tags, that's right, this was also giving me tycho vibes as i started laying it down. my wife and i just watched 'American Symphony' due to multiple recommendations, and it's all about Jon Batiste and his wife and career. so we've been listening to a lot of his work and it's great. very eclectic, lots of homages to various genres, and the documentary itself is about his road to compose his 'American Symphony' which he wanted to showcase so many different american voices, yet somehow cohesively working together. so that vibe is in here in terms of the layers at least.
