W44 - Generative Set Practice

By ENC_ on November 3, 2022 10:47 pm

Back for week 44. I was scheduled to play a show in San Francisco on November 13th but just received news the show is being canceled for some unforeseen circumstances. We are hoping to re-book this lineup at a later date.

Inspired by IDM artists, I wrote roughly 30 minutes of new generative material for the now-canceled show and did a quick practice run. The full run time makes the MP3 file too big for the WB site. I cut it down to a few excerpts for here. The idea is it's a guided experience through automated music and sound pallets.

If anyone is interested in the full practice run I can send a link or something.

Gear Used:
84HP Eurorack (live glitch percussion)
180HP Eurorack (percussive sound design base)
Dirtywave m8 (live synth, main drums, Main generative sequencing, and main clock)
Elektron Digitakt (live generative glitch sample sequencing, additional drum sequences,)
Elektron Rytm (Sampled into M8)
Elektron Machinedrum (Sampled into M8 and Digitakt)
Casio CZ-1 (pad sampled into M8)
Kawai R-100 (Sampled into M8)
Fors Lux (automated to generate glitch samples for Digitakt)
Ableton (time-stretch sound design of samples, automated to generate Karplus strong processing of 180hp sound design samples used by Digitakt)
NES (Sampled into M8)
Sega Genesis (Sampled into M8)

UPDATE: So this show ended up being uncanceled and I played this set. I'll share a full video version when I am done editing the footage together.

Honestly... I am not sure. It was a pretty chaotic night and the reaction was mixed with some people really liking it and others left pretty baffled. Especially in the beginning I really threw people off because I basically just started with sparse sound textures and took my time evolving it into something more conventional.

I'd say I had a 70% success rate of onboarding the crowd throughout the performance by the end but it was a slow process. Either way, I think I got what I wanted out of it. It was my "fuck it set" just to see if I could get away with doing something weird so I was pretty happy with how it came out.
