W26 - Gong&Bell Loops

By ENC_ on July 3, 2022 9:46 pm

I was listening to different works by experimental composers this week. I made this by looping recordings of me interacting with a gong and a bell. The loops were left out of phase and were triggered live in Ableton's clip-launching screen and allowed to self-trigger using follow actions. I also added a time-stretched cut-up voice recording from an old.MOD file.

Gear used:
Tascam DR-40 (recording different sources)
Ableton (clip-launching, sequencing, effects)
Operator (Drones)
Vietnamese Gong Made from Old Material
Buddhist Bell
95-ravers-megamix.mod (sampled voiced, cut, Time Stretched)
Fors Romb (Alesis Quadraverb like reverb)

Fascinating stuff.

Hey enc! Is this the one you were talking about? Super interesting, this is quite different from the other phasing pieces I’ve heard, in that all the sounds are pretty different. The phasing effect here feels very different from when it’s the same line playing or notes of the same kind of timbre. Really creates something organic, but less obvious what is actually going on… kinda opens up a lot of new composing opportunities. Even if  it’s not this one you meant I really enjoyed listening to it!

This is indeed the one I was thinking about. I think the slow ambient focus also lends to hiding the effect as it's harder to keep track of time and timing. It's been a while but from what I remember the main gong loops are actually the same sound with one repitched to another lower note. the rep-itch extends the loop length of the sample making the phase off. all the parts are technically phased but I brought them in at different times to try and give some more traditional electronic music compositional control.

The part I always find interesting in phased music is when to end the composition. Do you wait for things to be in sync or do you cut it arbitrarily and consider that a compositional choice.

Hmm very interesting considerations, kind of makes me want to have another go at it soon. Interesting to bring the tracks in at different times, I think i was using automation with filtering for a similar purpose, but I really like the effect of losing track of the time almost completely. I think I almost did everything  at the point of synchronisation, bringing in new tracks and when the piece ended, but could be interesting playing around with not doing that. Also in case that you’re not strictly making a phasing composition but just using it as an effect. Super interesting! (Should really find other words than interesting haha.)
