W11 - HIT CLIP TEST

By ENC_ on March 17, 2024 9:57 am

In the 2000's the TV was flooded with ads for a lofidelity digital music toy called Hit Clips. They were cartridge based audio players that were marketed to kids so the could listen to top 40's songs for teens. Portable Mp3 players hadn't been popularized yet. It was a novelty to listen to digital music on a tiny device. CD players and the outdated cassettes were the norms.

The audio quality was awful (8bit mono 1-ish minute of audio max) with a ton of background noise. In my childhood I never owned one as they always seemed like an expensive gimmick. Used to make fun of these commercials.

A few years ago I learned of a version of the toy that could also record and I became interested in how it could be used as a lofi processor. I found one and played with it once and put it in a drawer for a few years. Rediscovered it this week and put it to the test on some drum machines.

The song started promising but I could not secure a interesting direction and burnt myself out by overlistening rather the just continuing to move forward when i had momentum. Finished just for the sake of finishing but the result was shorter track with interesting bits but poor cohesion.  Probably wont work on this one again. Throw it in the bin. might need a break for a while. Happy to let it go. don't want to torture myself anymore with it. Week lopsided with a low ambient sense of returning mental states. Aware of it now. Maybe why more conflict. R&L Baby shower. Helped fixed A's parent's basement. Drained 15 gallons of water. Reached out to by VTC. They are going back to work but had a pleasant conversation when called about family history. Need to check in on Uncle. Family has limited timelines. Havent been working on homework. time getting harder to track. Home town a good reflection point. talked with people at party about manager struggles and tech. eye strain.

Gear Used:
Dirtywave M8
Korg Volca FM mk.ii
Roland S-1
Yahoo Hit Clips Downloader
Tascam DR-50

Gear Sampled:
Yamaha RX-11
Roland TR-09

Software Used:
Ableton 12
Izotope 10
Sound Toys Radiator
Izotope Vinyl

Recored 808, 909, and other drum machine samples into Hitclip, resampled into M8 for composition squencing. tried using scales. Volca FM alway sounds better then it is. It's a struggle to use when I work. too much extra work to program. can't be bothered with the vst editor. used haunted pad and plastic pad slots 1 and 3 and rendered down. Brought in S-1 for simplicity and subtractive voicing. needed to record seperatley as it was not rendered. exported stems and matched recording in ablteton. minor tweeks and eqing. no headphones or monitors. just visual adjustments and ozone 10's automation with insight visual monitoring. Good enough. Sick of this one. good enough for a test and practice this week. Exploration is the key.

Dig it!  Tasty beats indeed with lovely warbly melodies.  Nice one.

Y2K Esoterica Electronica. did give the percussion nice fuzzy quality. might have been interesting if you had recorded the track into it for the final render.

Thats a cool idea; love old tech like that. I liked it a lot, cool track!

Thanks! I was a little underwhelmed with the result but I am glad you enjoyed it at least.

Not a bad idea. The song is short enough that probably could have done the full thing too. I might try this in the future to really see how it messes things up.

Honestly IDK if it was worth seeking out that device but I had fun trying it anyways.

I somehow don't recall Hit Clips but what a cool idea to make use of it for a track. Lots of rhythmic and melodic variation squeezed into a short track, but it feels cohesive to my ears. Sounds like quite a week, kudos for getting a WB in on top of everything.

very nice! i love short tracks with loads of activity packed into them. a totally engaging listen all the way through.

love the concept. your pads are really lovely.

Haha it's not worth remembering really. It was not a very good product.

Glad you were into it. I feel a little less frustrated with this one now that I have had some time away from it.

Thanks. I used the Volca FM for the pads. I want to like that thing more but the UI is a pain. It genuinely is a better experience to program FM patches on my yamaha DX7 or TX81z. Unfortunately those aren't as easy to setup when I am writing on the couch.
