W07 - Ruby's Song

By ENC_ on February 18, 2024 1:12 pm

User Wangus mentioned using a TX81Z last week in the discord. I decided to utilize mine since I repaired it recently. I have a real soft spot for old FM synths and chips. I reworked some of the mastering I did in the week prior and have a put together a cover for bandcamp. Still a WIP for the live release. I should be spending more time on my responsibilities and career stuff. Don't feel great about that. Song named after my cat who visited me while working on this track. She's a beacon of light for this time in life. Sampled her during visit.

I made another track this week as a test for the new Alpha juno plug in from TAL. much shorter might resurrect for next week. I miss owning a alpha juno. Regret selling for juno-6. looking into MKS version. Seeking less time with uninspiring things and trapped in loop. Interest from the week 1 2 3 4 5 6  7 palaqara by 0F.digital, Lone Trax vol. 2 by Auvrel, Da Nao Tian Gong by Polygonia, Surfaces by IJO, LIVE 2019 by Louis cole. Future planning put off for the week. German restaurant.

Gear Used:
Dirtywave M8
Yamaha TX81Z
Tascam DR-40 (Live recorded)

Sampled:
Cyclone TT-303
Roland TR-606

Software:
Ableton (sample processing, mastering)
Audacity (sampling)
Izotope Ozone 10
Tape [max]

M8 sequencing, mixing, and effecting TX81Z. Direct 2 channel recording from M8. Audacity used to capture Ruby. Had to read manual to save patch. After editing, go back to play mode and then hold store, use increment buttons to select memory space. let go of store button to select bank and press yes to confirm save. Mixed feelings positive life negative career and time lost. found grays mixed in with normal hair... stressful to think about. Rough interaction with VTC but reached out during week. Hope they recoginize the effort. Checked in on FB. different person. Missing lexicon Alex, not sure where it went. was going to use for processing the TX81Z (polyphonic + stereo stuff). mastered stereo recording in ableton.

Program changes not used. Requires manual patch switch in M8 to recreate.

File Name: Ableton "W07 - Rubys Song", M8 "FURENDWEB", TX81Z "I01 ENC_WEB"

AFX vibes are strong in this one. I'm a fan of FM synthesis, too, and here you use the TX81Z without obvious presets so it works well without being too much in-your-face. I dig this!

One of my favorite week7 tracks!!!

I really enjoy this style, you've put together an excellent composition. those ambient weird sounds especially at the end freaked me out, I wasnt sure if it was my stomach or something weird happening outside, but my speakers arent the greatest at the moment, anyway it added to the experience.

there's some spooky shit happening in the middle
it sounds really cool

Thanks! I was pretty pleased how things came out. I have an aversion to presets when I write. I feel like half the fun of using a synth is in the sound design. In a lot of ways it informs what I end up writing.

FM synthesis is my favorite way to make sound. I really like these old FM machines. They have a particular flavor and way of working that opens creativity and makes me a bit more methodical.

Thanks for the kind words. Don't worry, it's just my cat making that noise. She's a sweetie I promise tongue
A bit of timstretching and pitch shifting makes everything a bit uneasy.

lovely mellow braindance track. i like the treatment of the breaks that come and go in the middle section.
