W04 - Town Bell (All sounds are an 808 cowbell sample)

By ENC_ on January 24, 2024 4:05 am

A few hours after last week’s upload I started a new track based on a few discord conversations. The first was about my love for 808 cowbells and making new genres around that. The latter was about creating a track with only one sample for everything. I’ve occasionally done this over the years and even once for a weekly beats with a cheap toy gun. It’s a fun exercise for writer’s block but not too challenging overall. This song is a generative piece made with Ableton’s cowbell sample as its only sound source.

It’s a busy week with family and friends. Glad to knock this one out early. It was maybe about a 3-hour flow state to finish. Finished around 3:30 AM on the first day. It’s pretty in tune with the current living feeling.

Software used:
Ableton
Granulator II (max)
Tape (max)
Fors Romb (max)
Fors Opal (max) - Granular engine only
Sound Toys Echoboy (space echo sim)
Inphonik RX 950 (sample coloring)
Sonosuarus PaulxStretch
The Fellow Passenger [tfp] Slip Through (max)
Izotope Ozone 10

Built around polyrhythmic percussion and generative patterns. Pre-composed general structure and intended fades. Let run. Printed to stems. Focused on granular synthesis and basic sample manipulation and looping. Paul stretch used to add atmosphere to help glue parts together better. Tape on the master for summing coloration with Ozone 10 for mastering. Minor mixing of stems. Opal Patterns may be lost due to a saving error or glitch.

I'm impressed! I gotta learn how to use granulator myself, it sounds so good here.

Wow! So many different textures from 1 cowbell. Nice, thank you!

Impressive!

Even when it's literally 100% cowbell, it probably still needs more, for one, an actual cowbell sound.

Very versatile uses!

Haha nice! It cannot even have more cowbell, it's 100%!

It's great but a bit limited in some respects. I am also not a fan of the UI layout. There is a new version being the tested in the Ableton live 12 beta I think. I'm eager to see the imporvements.

Thanks. I don't use granular stuff often but I think it worked in this instance. It did most of the work. It was a lot funner the standard sample manipulation techniques.

Maybe I'll shoot for an acoustic cowbell hooked to robotic servos and a mic next time tongue

Thank you. I was pretty happy with how it panned out this time.
