500 year flood

500 year flood

"Prior to 1852, about 250 miles of the Kankakee River and 95% of the Grand Marsh were found in Indiana.  Dredging from 1852 to 1917 removed 2,000 river bends. The river that had meandered 250 miles creating oxbows, bayous, marshes, and sand islands was channeled into a straight 90 mile ditch... The Grand Marsh, which had been the largest wetland in North America, was reduced to approximately 30,000 acres.

The destruction of the marsh and the channelization of the river created a lot of good farmland.  It also created problems that exist to this day.  Flooding and erosion are now serious and expensive issues...  Sand and silt... is changing the river.  It covers the rock bottom of the river there drastically affecting its biology and with every rain it displaces more water thereby increasing the potential for flooding and affecting the river’s flow.

Restoration of parts of the river and a portion of the floodplain are feasible and cost effective solutions to addressing these problems, much more than dealing with the issues years from now after more development in the basin.  Restoration can also be done in a way that will attract visitors and create a local tourism industry."

"Oh, when will they ever learn?"

Great bass loop, water sound (sampled or synth?) and unsettling atmosphere!

came into the room tonight to the most magical sounds & after a long hike i'm falling into a drone-space happy buzz trance listening to "holst neptune"  is that a reference to "holsts planets"  - just lovley & cool to find we are listening to each other pieces at the same time!

has a creepy feel! reminds me a bit of Our Neighbor's Daughter by Why?
love the harmonies!

The bass sound is awesome on this, but the whole thing does somehow have a swampy, watery feel somehow.  Nice job.

I see I'm not the only one who did a geographically inspired track. It's friendly, but swampy!

Oh, awesome!  Yes--it's a slowed-down version of Holst's Neptune.  Just Neptune, but slowed down to 1/4-speed, with the other slowed to 1/8.  Since the original orchestral recording I used was almost 9 minutes, when it's stretched 4x you get almost 36, and 8x you get almost 72. It's using the Paulstretch algorithm, which is is probably the smoothest of the stretching algorithms, because it doesn't interpolate from sample to sample, but instead runs FFT on blocks of samples and then resynthesizes the FFT-derived waveforms.  Pretty darned slick!

Haunting.

great organic bass sound and awesome vocal line! love it.

Atmosphere is hypnotising

The bass is awesome... and i the sweepy synth is cool with the picture of swamps and water...

"I've been to every city in Mexico. Came across an unclaimed piece of meat in Baja, turned out to be Rosie. Guess he picked a knife fight with somebody better. Found a passport of yours in Sumatra. Missed you by about a week in Fiji. But I knew you wouldn't miss the 50-Year Storm, Bodhi." - Johnny Utah, 1991.
