The audio on this website is truncated to fit the 16 MB size limit. I thought about compressing further but I instead elected to just upload a shorter version alongside the full-length YouTube video, listed below.
This performance was recorded by Trevor S. For the piece, I played my MicroKorg running through a looping pedal, reverb pedal, compressor pedal, and then harmonizer pedal. In combination, I played my Stylophone CPM-DS2 with its dual oscillators separated into left and right stereo. I used its built-in delay and reverb as a pedal for my Volca Drum.
I started the set by recording a 6 minute loop. I then turned up the reverb, and brought in the Stylophone DS2's oscillators, which I controlled separately (although they were synced by the LFO rate, I had their LFO depths diametricallay opposed). While they were running, I started bringing in the Volca Drum through the delay until it started to self-oscillate. The Volca was synched with the LFO rate of the DS2, so it played pretty slowly in the beginning. I slowly brought up the LFO rate, down the volume of the Volca, and brought in a custom patch I created on my Sonicware Liven Ambient 0 that played a series of rando notes through a delay, syncopating until they created a rhythmic melody. I then brought up the reverb until they almost sounded like synth pads. Next I switched the DS2's LFO to this waveform that sounds like dance music at the right frequency, and messed around with cutoffs to create notes to the beat. I brought in feedback from the other instruments, and the Ambient 0's digital feedback was perfect for creating a chaotic melodic beat that led into the climax where I turned on strobe lights and gobbling napkins. The crowd was cheering but the music was so loud that it's hard to hear, but I tried to isolate some of the recorded vocals for the audio. Once my mouth was stuffed, I started fading everything out and brought the loop pedal's melody back in, and we all kinda just vibed out in this cool shared experience.
The crowd wasn't the largest, but a lot of my friends agreed to wear costumes and dance/perform to the soundscapes which made this gathering feel truly magical. Thank you to everyone who made this project happen, and to everyone who came to the show.
Special shoutout to Joe of Dot.Wall for inviting me to perform, Ren's Den for giving us the space, Johnny for running sound, and Noah for handling the door. I think the dog is Noah's but I'm not sure. Love that critter tho
