Snow Falling on Spiders

By E-dub on January 17, 2016 8:32 pm

I have a little bit of a frog-in-throat thing going on this week, so I didn't do any vocals (cue huge sigh of relief from the masses). Without lyrics and a hook to guide me, I always struggle naming my instrumental songs.  The title has no significance at all as far as I know.

Tough luck for the spiders, good for the rest of us.

I love the ethereal piano in the background of the intro.

One idea: maybe use a little less compression on the drums so as not to overwhelm the quieter elements of the song.  Good stuff!  The track title gave me a cool mental image.

You really improved your sound, Edmund! This one really sounds great to me, and let's not forget the whole composition is great. Reminds me of Mogwai a little bit. Really digging all those pianos and acoustic parts in it. I liked this one indeed, very much.

I kinda agree with this one, although this week you truly achieve a good sound IMHO, and the whole overdrived drums give it quite an energetic contrast to the piano parts. I don't know which DAW you are using, but I guess you'd have some "booster/saturator" instead of a compressor. Difference is subtle, anyway. I must recommend you some good tutorial on multiband compression, which affects each frequency band (low, mid , high) differently, so you could give punch to the kick and snare without "crushing" the hihats.

Anyway, I really loved this one the way it is. Not to diss your vocal ones at all, but here you seem to free yourself as a composer (maybe because you don't have to worry about matching the lyrics?). Curioous to see how you match such elaborated structures with the classic "verse/chorus/verse" (I surely can't, and I admire you for that).

Great one, I mean it

Quite nice

Potent and punchy. EQ/Compression suits for the vibe imo!
Also that tempo change in the middle, YEAH!

It's a nice comp, but that high synth was really hard to get through man.  : |

Cool use of chords and guitar picking. EQ and compression need some work and I would use a softer lead, but interesting mix and good song structure

Yeah, poor spiders.

Thanks, I always appreciate advice on how to improve my sound.  That's what I love most about WB.

Since I rank you as one of the top sound engineers around here, I really appreciate the compliment--and all the suggestions you've given me since I started on WB.  I almost always write as if I were going to have vocals/lyrics, and sometimes I just don't have anything that fits or I run out of time.  So the structure is there but the parts that usually give my songs dimension or depth or whatever aren't and I end up adding other instruments to compensate.  Not always, but I think that's how it was in this case.

Thank you.  It was actually a tempo and time signature change.  I went from 123bpm in 4/4 to 80bpm in 6/8 and back.  Also, the intro and outro were 100bpm in 4/4.

yeah i love how it's falling apart in the middle, too. the acoustic intro is great, i don't mind the guitar compression at all. also really like the title. a strong image, somehow (staring off in the distance)...
