Explaining The Punchline

..but then it's not funny anymore.

I don't like this one, it is very ugly. This week I was devoid of inspiration for Weekly Beats. As a middle finger to my failing creativity, I deliberately made some horrible sounds on M8 and haphazardly threw them together into this. Somehow, this one ended up using only wavsynth and macrosynth and spans a total of four tracks. All done on Dirtywave M8. No need to polish a turd, so I didn’t do any extra mastering.

Get the bundle for it

This week, I did have fun with my submission for the Dirtywave M8 Discord Meetup: a track I made last year called “Ghostwriter”. It’s more of a demo than a song, really. When it plays on an M8 device, it takes over control via internal MIDI and starts to add to the song as it plays, while doing all sorts of shenanigans. I put in some time this week to add a couple more tricks at the end. You can see the latest version of it in the M8 Discord Meetup video. If you want to compare, the original is here.

The intro sounds like those annoying clock-ticking-timers in a Mario speed-challenge, that instantly gets on your nerves, making you fail more often than necessary. It then gets remixed by you, and its a jam, I;d still fail the time challenges, but at least im headbanging along.

Wow, all that, and only with 4 tracks?!
Some serious groove, the illusion of rhythm with instruments all put into one track is reminiscent of some Aphex Twin tracks.
Was not expecting the abrupt ending!
Good job.

I totally get the association with Aphex Twin. I was also reminded of Venetian Snares by some sounds around 1:05. smile

Woah this is bonkers. I love the chord planing in the intro really cool and old console vibe.

Super infectious rhythms as well.

This is definitely the soundtrack to a sand/desert level smile

Haha had the same feelings for this weeks submission. With a a less creative track too. Anyway the ghostwriter track was a brillinat mindfuck. Loved it so much I had to show to my non M8 mates. They already thorught working with teh M8 is mindfuck of its own, so it got lost on them, but Tim's reaction in the stream was a joy. "your m8 is hacked". Great giggles. Troop on. Love your stuff.

Love how there's actually a really nice poppy chord progression hiding in the mess - and I gotta say, the sound design is still pretty charming.

Wait, you don't like this one? I think this is neat! I'm sad that it just stops like it does. But other than that, it's great!
