All time low

By drmindflip on March 30, 2014 10:47 pm

Hello everyone - I hope a terrific week was had by all! The wintery weather here in Ireland is having serious separation anxiety and just won't let up, but there is a touch of spring optimism in the air...

Big, big love to all of you for the amazing feedback, comments and encouragement yet again - I took two big steps over the past week as a result. Firstly, a nocturnal trip to the exciting new Rainwater Studios in Kilbeggan (yes, home of the whiskey) to jam and rehearse with the freaky and fabulous Dr. Mindflip band. Secondly, we had our very first live performance for a video shoot in a local media production studio. It was seriously rewarding and featured one of the tunes from the past 12 weeks...can you guess which it might be? wink

I'll be posting it the minute it's released online, as it really does belong here for many reasons, but meanwhile here's a slice of angry oddness for you all to enjoy. Sorry about the occasional clicks - little gremlins that stowed-away during recording that I have yet to stamp out...

Enjoy!

All time low:

My confidence is at an all time low
I can't seem to find my get up and go
While my confidence is oh so low

A laneway of trees
The late summer breeze
No sense of unease in me
You see, my strap muscles grew
Fused into a noose
Pull and it’s easy for you to be
Without worry

Misshapen and atrophied positive-point-of-view
It's been an interesting trip to say the least
Now these lovely people I've met have appetites to whet
When you’re finished trying to be
The ghost at the feast

My confidence was at an all time low
Never a truer word spoken, you had to go!
I wish I could say nice to know you

Such a warm feeling off the chords in this week's song, absolutely love it!! I have a real soft spot for chords in lower octaves, listening with headphones too so the extra vocal layers about half way through really tickled the ears!! smile And yet again, you have managed to tighten the screws between your vocals and piano playing, great work wink

Yessss ... sweet deal, it's been way too long!! Loving that Gilmourish piano/vocal solo (and did I detect a sneaky hint of "Old Joe's Place" at the beginning??) Seriously though, those impassioned vocal lines are really ripping it up ... a new direction for the Doctor perhaps..?

I wouldn't have believed it possible, but you've topped yourself.  I love your vocal harmony and the syncopation with your piano is smile

Great voice and performance... This really sounds like we need to see it happening onstage. Great song

This is awesome, wow. Super catchy. Has a crazy piano/vocal "solo". Your vocal performance is just so full of character omg I love it.

Wow! amazing work as always, and I'll join others and say that the piano/vocal solo is the icing on the cake. Oustanding!

Terrific performance as usual! Waiting for the video smile

Usually there's a line in your lyrics that always sticks out to me and this week, my confidence was at an all time low.  This week I dreaded working on something and I'm not really sure why.  But you summed it up in the lyrics and thankfully all our new WB friends are here to keep us going!  Love the playful piano and how your vocals bend and shape shift.  I don't know how you do it smile  Kudos on another great track man!

Can't say anything else but big big applause once again for this one. I'm insanely jealous of your vocals/piano skills big_smile Kee up the outstanding work!

Thank you very much sir! It's a pleasure to tickle your talented ears on a weekly basis smile
I'm enjoying the extra bit of control of the piano lately and going on a quest to learn all my scales properly, despite the protestations of my inner 10-year old self...wish me luck!

Hullo! I'm glad you like how this one finally turned out! Never even thought of Old Joe's Place, but it's so funny the way we clearly soak up these little nuggets...I'm just drawn to anything with slightly off-kilter use of the human voice, why not have fun with it!? I'm glad you're digging it smile

Thanks very much for your encouragement Edmund, I'm really glad you're enjoying my tracks (and cheers for the YouTube sub! I hope to get the more recent song videos edited and up soon)
I'm a sucker for the syncopation! Saves me having to play two things all at once wink

Wow thank you very much big_smile  And as for your suggestion, I'm working on it...watch this space!

Thanks a million johnfm! I've been listening to a lot of music where people play about with their voices and it must be sinking in - the echo in my shower has a lot to answer for!

Hehe that was such a last minute decision! I was biding my time until the next vocal bit, trying to keep my groove on just singing along with every intention of cutting it out later, and I just felt a bit playful and left it in! Thanks a million RawTicks, much appreciated big_smile

Thanks so much twistboy! I haven't got around to editing the videos from the last week or two but I hope to get on it this week smile  Plus a full-band live video is on its way very soon indeed...

Wow man, thanks so much! I was only just speaking to my girlfriend about art today and the desire to affect/help others in some way. The idea that something in my own music strikes a chord (whoops, cheesy analogy in this context, let's say 'touches a nerve') with another person and their life situation brings me so much satisfaction and confidence, ironically! Thanks for sharing smile

As for that dread of the 'blank page' or getting started, I can say two things with absolute certainty: 1 - we all get it from time to time (I've become intimately acquainted with it through WB!) and 2 - you, personally, have a colossal list of reasons to feel confident about your work, which I need not go into here. You'll find an excerpt on your own track comments every week wink
