Wobble

By Devieus on October 6, 2018 9:48 pm

This week I implemented a thing chiptune artists do, but in my own MML way. You see, there's no such thing as panning, there's only the left channel and the right channel and the way to fake panning is to shake a signal between these two. To some this is common knowledge, but to me it's an opportunity.

I experimented with envelopes in macrotune and put a very short rest before the start of the right channel, which is why it's wobbling.

That's pretty much all I did, but it's a pretty hard hitting change.

I also like the I-IV-vi bit in the first part, I'll have to do something with that.

Quite fun. With my hearing loss, I may be missing some of the subtleties.

Yeah, that wobble sound is righteous.  The speeding up is cool and adds an interesting variety to the track as a whole, but I think the wobble effect itself worked best for me when it was at its slowest.  It's a really awesome sound.

The third crazy piece I listen to this morning. Together with this week's contributions of Jim Wood and Cosmic Cairns this the next step into an adventurous new week. Vielen Dank.

Yea, that may well be the case.

Agree, though it's not bad in the second either.

It's not that weird though, I think?

I like the effect. Sounds like a stereo warble or leslie cabinet effect. Vaguely aware of the 8bit panning limitation but did not know about the wobble. I always learn something new here.

It's an ancient technique passed down through the ages in secret scrolls to only those who were deemed worthy. Then I took a shot at it just because and it was alright.

Sounds really cool on headphones!  Nice execution on the wobble, and the tempo changes are great.

The only way to enjoy panning wobble. And maybe a stereo speaker configuration.

My kind of wobble, delightful smile

It's everyone's kind, it's there for everyone to enjoy.

Hehehehe, you're absolutely right smile

Cute and joyful wobbles!

Delicious wobbling. No such thing as panning - gives me something to think about today. Thanks!

The cutest, I made sure of that.

It's more a thing of necessity than anything else sometimes, but it's yet another thing to work with.

I had absolutely no idea about that hardware limitation on old videogame consoles, but it makes so much sense in hindsight.

I had a hunch when the GBC sound emulator in LMMS had features to turn on/off left/right channel and I'm sure it can be done much more elegant than this, but it's a decent approximation.

Very cool idea with the wobbling and a nice soothing chord progression

Thanks, the progression is procedurally generated as well. It's nothing special yet though.
