Rogue Bass

By Devieus on June 16, 2018 6:27 am

Don't you hate it when you're playing chords like a normal person, but then the bassist just plays other notes, completely changing the chord, so now you're going to need a music theorist to figure out what's going on? Me neither.

Although the leads play the C major chord for the most part, the bass never cooperates. It's a fairly common practice really, but it's nice putting a magnifying look on it; you know, as good as someone like I would ever do in a minute.

So what can I draw from this? It's little different from if you kept the bass playing one note and just changed the chords, just not as exciting, but instead creates an air of relaxation even in tense moments (David Wise's best work has it). So that's another good thing to know.

Nicely orchestral!!! Like it smile

You wouldn't need a theorist if you hadn't a bass playin terrorist before...
That bass is real nice with the chords!

What, bass players aren't normal people? Don't confuse us with drummers. It's up to bass players to point out the errors of you Polyophites. I like the off color produced by the chords and bass going in different directions but the 8bit sounds and minimalist drums are also stealing the show. I like the breaks where everything but the drums and that trilling sound drop off.

I really like the added buzzy square on top of everything smile

It's a rather slim orchestra, but I suppose it's complex for it.

Technically you'll always do well having a music theorist on staff, whether the bassist is up to something or not.

If anything I'm saying they're the opposite of drummers. The drums are all about rhythm, but the bass can do whatever the hell it wants, even, or especially, in defiance of the rest of the band.
Speaking of drums, I like mine subdued. I much prefer putting pianos, chips and other leads in front, and now bass too.

The song desperately needed it really. Before I added that it was super directionless.

Next do rouge bass, make-up the rest of the band.

Those damn bass players always wandering off and doing their own thing.  Who do they think they are? smile  It is cool how they have the ability to change the entire sound of the chord just by messing with the perceived root note.  In other words, don't piss off your bassist.  smile

Definitely has the feeling that the bass is not cooperating, so it's effective

Those pesky bassists! Fall in line!  The buzzy square brings it all back in though smile

It's only a wrong note if you didn't mean to. Otherwise, it's "extended harmony." ::)

It's gonna be fabulous.

Or do, out of sheer experimentation.

I guess we all learned a thing today.

You can't stop the free spirit of the bassist! Of course the chippist is just happy to be here.

Some call it Jazz, but really it's the bassist seizing the means of chord progression and creating some funny inversions.

That bass player is about 2 shows away from getting kicked out of the band! smile

He's already playing something from two venues away in this one, he'll bounce back up in no time.

Bass player: "Hey I can't make it to the show, but is it cool if I send you my performance for you to play at the show?"

It should come as no surprise, being a chipmusician myself, that I really enjoyed the arpeggios in contrast with the piano and the drums. That tambourine sounds really clean and I like how every instrument has its own space in the track. Nice!

I'd like to think of myself as a chip man too, I really need to add more of it. They provide great juxtaposition with just about any instrument, like a half-decent choir becomes much better.
Also the tambourine sounds are just samples, but the Timbres of Heaven soundfont is pretty solid.

those bass triplets made me happy in the ears

That's nice to hear, even though I don't recall putting in triplets.

i really like the 'changing the root note' thing... it works so well here!

60% of the time, it works all the time.
