Medley Ultimus

By Devieus on December 30, 2018 9:16 pm

It's a medley of all the songs I composed this year, book-ended by pieces of music my procedural music generator composed.

Throughout the year I've been going in a three week cycle; week 1 is by the procedural generator, week 2 was me with my melodica, week 3 was whatever I wanted. This obviously goes on until week 51, so it felt only natural I combined all of it for week 52. I had planned the union well in advance, though not quite like this; I wanted to play something the generator composed on my melodica, but a medley is probably better in the end.

I do believe it's also the first ever medley in the history of WeeklyBeats (and I've listened to each and every song, so I ought to know; I may well be mistaken) and I have to admit there are some good and some bad bits, especially around the half-way point with songs like Civilized and Kill Feed.

For the production of this song I had to revisit every song and re-render and re-record everything to one unified BPM, including the melodica parts and the songs written in MMM (which is still a pain in the ass, for the record), though I did take a few shortcuts in some places (I didn't want to reconstruct the kit for Skalodica and MMM was just being rude for The Mysterious Melodica Man), but for the most part it's legit.

Happy new year, and after I've listened to the songs of this week, I'll see you in 2020.

The absolute madman pulled it off where others reached for the reverb and came out with indistinguishable ambiance... an articulate, conclusive achievement! Thanks for a great year, Devieus; it's been a privilege to meet this challenge, week after week, in parallel with inventive musicians such as yourself.

Let's just say my name is apt.

"Though this be madness, yet there is method in it" - Hamlet Act 2, scene 2

All year you've brought intricate and inventive setups to the table, with wild and mesmerizing results. I very much enjoyed how you also detailed your process; I'm still way behind on the theory but it helped me learn new things while listening to some really cool tracks! Happy new year to you as well and congratulations on a 165 track streak. Damn impressive smile

Don't worry about the theory, let me worry about the theory. Your music is tight and flows well anyways, music theory would probably be useless to you since it's more about asking questions than giving answers. That is, unless you want to try some freaky stuff.

I like asking questions and freaky stuff is always a nice way of breaking the status quo! I'm always down to learn new things, doesn't matter if I end up having an immediate use for them. Knowledge is very rewarding as its own thing sometimes.

Happy End of 2018!  Hope your 2019 is even happier.  smile

Ah the logic revealed. This is pretty awesome. Medley Ultimus is the "It's a Wonderful Life" of WB2018 as the year in Devieus flashes by. Alternating pattern makes an interesting mosaic. On my third listen through smile

I've enjoyed listening to your tracks this year but did not learn a thing. It's (that one's on me) was all above my head. If you lack anything musically (doubtful) you more than make up for it in dry wit and sarcasm. Congrats on a complete year and hope to hear more in 2020. Cheers and don't forget to put a lime in that supertonic. Maybe I did learn something? Happy New Year - Mike

Well, this is wildly ambitious!  Good work!

Fantastic reminder of all the great stuff coming from your direction in 2018. A great idea and execution too...

That's about as fitting of an ending to a year of WeeklyBeats that I can think of.  Nice job.

I'm more than happy to ride on this elevator.

Here's to hoping.

You didn't even learn to use "it's" properly. I guess we'll just have to start your lessons all over in 2020.

It kind of was. If I'm going to do that again, I'll definitely prepare things in advance.

Thanks. It was nice revisiting everything again.

I'm surprised no one's doing it, it's the very best way to condense a year into a week.

It's only going up, which is kind of weird for an elevator.

Wow, what a spread of sounds! Great job all year!

Great concept way to end, really sums it all up in fun little package. So ... much, ultimus! Glad you've been here creating as you do and commenting in this community.

I guess that's a good description of what I ended up doing. Everything's different.

It's been a good time doing it. Truth be told I went with "ultimus" because I didn't want to go with "ultima". Next time I might go with "terminus" though.

That's one truly epic WB medley yikes  Here's me during the track "Hey i rem.. oh yea that... oooh the melodica"  It was like a crash course in Devieus 2018!  Best of luck in 2019! smile

this was such a wild ride. awesome job on the song. a nice taste of devieus radio

Thanks, it's what I was going for. It's essentially a recap of the entire year.

Thanks. Truly a bouquet of my various frequencies.

...Fine condensed and dense journey. Props for planning “the union well in advance” – that’s long-time planning. The bpm unification indeed works better than my non-beat-mixing approach.

There was simple math involved for real, 2018 was quite a year for him and it's inspiring me to go back to manual composition in 2024

Looking forward to it! Will you use the same sound pallette manually? Maybe I’ll attempt a real year-long arc in 2024, , but it’s a difficult task.
