Insomnia

By Devieus on March 2, 2022 7:45 am

This song was not made by me, but instead by my friend; he didn't want to make a WB account because he suffers from extreme trust issues, so I'm uploading it on his behalf instead
It's actually three songs that I crossfaded together and put a compressor on, so it's not like I didn't work on it at all, but the vast majority of the work is all him
He also had this to say about the songs:

A short, simple ambient track that I've made, based upon my own personal experiences of sometimes, quite rarely, hearing whispering voices at night that'll keep my awake, hence the title "Insomnia".

It contains the original track, and two variants of it.

The whispering voices, along with the groans that're present within these tracks are all me. The whispering voices was me reciting out one of my blogs in a whispering tone, then pitched down just a bit, reversed and added a slight reverb effect to it, passing it through a high pass limiter at least once.

The white noise is what I generated next, adding mixing it with various small effects such as high pass limiters, at least twice, a slight bit of tremolo and a soft hum along with it.

The groans and the whispers are at different decibels of pitch, with whispers favoring treble and the groans moving onto the lower octaves.

I know it's not my usual fare, so I also made my own song this week:

I put some effort into this, really letting the composer do its composing and me doing my job turning that composition into a song

In regards to a personal update, I've mostly been playing Elden Ring, but do suffer from bouts of gender dysphoria on occasion on top of my usual dysmorphia, so I take the good with the bad

Tell your friend their work is great, I really like the how focused the sounds are on reinforcing various aspects of the voice (noise in whisper, noise in noise, noise in bass, noise in the upper-register things, noise in groans). The track title is particularly relatable. Great work.

P.S. The chiptune piece is also delightful heart

Double feature.  Thought you were referring to the generator as your friend for a minute, cool piece that you/the gene put our this week though.

Your friends track is very cool.  Excellently haunting.

Ebrit your friend was able to express that inner experience in such an interesting, relatable, and compelling way - please thank them for sharing

it was really neat to see a visuals with the generated piece - it felt like a little adventure

the groaning was so scary / amazing

reminded me a bit of Autechre's work on Confield at points

Also thanks~

Nope, a legit human with legit issues, though my generator is quite a piece of work too

I'll be sure to tell him what you think of it

I'll be sure to do that

And thanks for the comment, people keep saying it's like a video game song and so I showed what that'd be like

I'll tell him about it

This is creepy as all get out. Damn, that middle lowered groaning sound/humming is very disconcerting. The sounds towards the end become increasingly savage.

Love your track matched with the video game video. The video and music work well together.

I appreciate your friend giving away his recipe for this unsettling sensation, it's quite something! and thanks to you for the pleasant chippy palette-cleanser smile

Thanks, and from my friend too. He really enjoys these comments.

I didn't really sync up the video, it just happens.

No problem, I know it's not everyone's thing, but I'm glad you enjoyed it to some degree.

Between the whispers, low drones and other samples, there is a lot of angst in this track. Horror movie territory. This is original and interesting, I enjoyed it.

Yea, I (the other I) arranged it to make it as unsettling as possible. Glad you liked it.

Ngl, your friend hit the nail on the head with that insomnia track. And for someone with ADHD shit kicks into overdrive so much more. Well played.
