flagpole clatter

By deeckzeven on February 14, 2026 5:04 pm

There is a small veterans memorial at a local park that I frequent. It includes a row of flag poles.

Last weekend while sitting on a bench I noticed that there was some breeze, but that it was not enough to make the flags actually fly. And even though the flags were hanging limp, somehow there was enough wind to make all the flag-supporting hardware continually clatter against the pole. If that's not a metaphor then I don't know what is.

Sometimes the noise was just chaotic clanging. Other times it seemed to get organized, banging out a little clave for a while. So it goes. Anyhow, I recorded that. And bit by bit, with no plan to speak of, it became this. Don't love it, but did finish it.

Love it! Very inventive use of found sound.

Super cool how it fades from a field recording into the song, very nicely done! There's a couple more of those moments in this track where there is no real hard cut from one section to the next, but they sort of drift in and out. The irregular time signatures and chord progressions made me lose track of where we actually are in the song, which made it all the more mezmerizing.

This is awesome. I love how well the field recording weaves into the track. Very rhythmic and melodically interesting. I’d be proud of this track!

no joke i love these flagpole sounds, and "long pieces of metal" sounds in general

SO cool how you turned this into a whole story!  downloading this.  glad you made it!

Thanks for listening! Yeah, lately 'm getting more comfortable with throwing a partial measure (or two, or just a beat, whatever) to help transitions and I feel like it is really helping. That used to seem really awkward to me, not sure what clicked.

Thank you! I felt like I was phoning it in melodically at the time. Listening back, I like it a lot more. smile

Thank you! Believe it or not, I am currently removing a chainlink fence from my backyard. So I have a growing pile of long metal things to whack. There will definitely be more "metal."
