(Disclaimer: Please don’t interpret this as me thinking I know things about microtonal music. I read a book once upon a time. I have no practical experience and have not listened broadly.)

The core of this track fell out of some experiments with quarter tones. The scale here is built from stacking two different 24 EDO thirds. Seems like there are number of names for this particular scale, but I see “Mohajira 7” coming up a lot.

One way to build this scale would be by taking the familiar 12 EDO major scale, lowering the 3 and 7 by a quarter step, and raising the 4 a quarter step. So it lands in some very ambiguous territory between minor and major. It’s not too alien sounding. But if you’re like me, it is different enough that you have to ignore what you think you know about harmony and start to develop a new lexicon of sounds.

If you're so inclined, you can check out the gory tuning details or the m8 scale file.

Also, crazy drums make everything better.

'overdrummed' in a good way, super impressive programming work. This really hit the spot!

That alternate tuning is really bringing out some fresh colors. Doing some research and preparation feels like a stark difference to the semi-random detuning I've been doing these past couple weeks haha. Gonna have to dive into that Sevish site and give that scale a go. Interesting stuff!

Really enjoyed the crazy percussive elements too. They absolutely fit the snakecharmer theme. A nice snappy collection of realistic and electronic sounding percussion you managed to get together. Especially the darbuka-like sound is amazing.

this is extremely cool! - the tuning really works. Downloaded and will definitely be listening to this one again.

Sounds great. Really makes me want to explore Microtonal music more.

Just downloaded your M8 scale file.

Thanks for listening! When i started with the M8 i'd use 1 or 2 tracks of drums. Then it turned into 3 or 4, and then i started rendering them down and still using 3 or 4 tracks. Probably need to rein that in. smile

Thanks for the listen! Good luck with that Scale Workshop site! Most of it is a complete mystery to me. Slowly absorbing little bits of the Xenharmonic Wiki, but it seems pretty inside-baseball.
