down with OPL3

By ddmm64 on March 3, 2024 11:48 pm

Last time people were saying my track made them think of the OPL3, well, this is for real OPL3. Ok, not totally since I'm not one of those maniacs that uses adlib tracker or anything like that, but all the sounds come from OPL3 sources (retrowave OPL3, blast beats), with varying amounts of FX and such courtesy of the M8, where everything was arranged.
I went for some kind of pseudoDnB sound because I've been trying to make more high-tempo stuff, though I find it harder than mid/low tempo tracks.

You are an incredible OPL3 sound designer.

This is so cool. Can you imagine if this track was in some 90s video game... instant classic

The breakdown and breakout at 2m is awesome.

you down with opl3
yeah you know me

I love the intensity! Really perked me the hell up after a long week and I dig the gritty sounds! You make me want to try to make something more high tempo myself smile

Thank you,  you're too kind big_smile To be fair, M8 is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of sound manipulation and FX, way beyond what the poor soundblaster-equipped 486s could do (which is kind of remarkable, isn't it?)

Definitely interested in exploring something more "pure" as far as OPL3 goes, I think it could work well with a more abstract or minimalist track.

haha, yes, glad someone caught my puerile reference. I was pretty surprised that my googling didn't find a song with that title already by some tracker artist.

and yeah go for it! the hardest part of high tempo tracks for me is that you need to make more bars to get the same number of minutes, but you gotta switch it up now and then!

Thanks to the M8 this sounds rather lush and hi-fi. Combined with the sound sources, this is what people think OPL3 sounded like when they remember it!

The track is fun, and there's a lot going on. Good job!

Thanks and agreed on OPL3. I randomly remembered making this track that my first exposure to classical music was some random MIDI file (Corelli's La folia iirc) I played as a test on an OPL3. I was blown away! Went on to listen to a ton of classical music in the form of MIDI files readily available on the internet, before I knew any better wink

Hell yeah saw that title and I was eager to listen!
I have a blast beats too! it's... quirky? haha I actually started a Twisted Electron Discord if you want to join it, not that it's super active but at least you can connect with other users.

Love when it goes full DnB, those high hats work so well!! Then the bass breakdown... holy shit, good stuff! (oooooooooooh fuck those FM noises then back to bouncing back and forth on my chair!)

the super death grind bass at 2:07 is a perfect way to end the track.  nice work!

Haha yo, I am in your discord already XD, thanks for making one! And thank you for the nice comments big_smile

I have no idea what OPL3 is, but I am definitely enjoying this upbeat sound from you .. I actually thought it had skipped to another artist.
