Comrade Deflection

By Dank Receptor on July 5, 2026 6:57 pm

In my ongoing series of "why make it easy when you can make it hard" I decided to learn defMON today. Spent most of the day in trial & error mode and ended up with a short and very basic acid/electro jam. I did manage to figure out quite a lot of defMON details along the way, however.

- Got comfortable with the SID registers
- Figured out the sidTAB table and its timing, primitive filter envelopes, etc
- Observed how janky the timing gets under certain conditions, and how effective some workarounds are (first and foremost avoiding a couple of values in the ADSR)

Anyway, this was great fun! I look forward to jamming more in defMON, and hopefully I'll make something slightly more captivating next time. tongue

Programmed and performed on a Commodore 64 Ultimate, recorded live through a Mackie mixer w/built in FX. Slightly mastered in Ableton.

Cheers parappayo! Yeah the 8580 SID does a very nice filter bass.

Music level: de(f)MON.
As simple as it sounds, it is hard to wrap my head around how this is done.
Nice job.

Love how you take the time to navigate unknown waters.. The result is super groovy! I get a bit of an Earthbound vibe off this, love it!

Very cool track especially considering the hoops you had to jump through to make it happen.

Love that deep woob.

It's been a while since I programmed the SID, mostly basic stuff applying some changes to the keyboard sample script.
Since it divides the 4kHz evenly across the 16bit values, you could come up with your own scale or make microtonal music. A few rabbit holes to go down smile Theoretically, it should also be possible to go well below 20 Hz but I wouldn't bet that the machine supports it properly in the audio path.

Looking forward to hear more.
