Midnight Snack

Long ago in another time, I lived in an enormous, rambling 1912 era house in a big city. That was where I raised (and home-schooled) my 3 kids, bred cockatiels and wrangled my pack of 5 rescue dogs.
The humans and dogs slept upstairs and sometimes I imagined, (maybe) there was a dog party in the kitchen in the middle of the night, that I found in the morning, or walked in on if I happened to go down the 2 flights of stairs in the middle of the night. At the foot of the stairs, lived Verdi a Nanday Conure (a green parrot with flaming red ankles) whose amazing Shreik alerted some sort of traffic on the stairs.
This song has a comical, sneaky, pink-panther feel to it-- as the lead dog pads down the stairs, advising the other canines and sometimes a child (and sometimes an adult!)to "follow me quietly", "don't tell", and "nothing to see here" The toenails click as the procession traverses the wood floored hallway into the kitchen. Verdi Shreiks a muted- greeting (he was in on it)!
The big dogs (and kids) work together in the darkened kitchen, getting food out of the fridge and and cabinets making sure that the little dogs got to have some. Happy Noshing-- then all go back to bed.
Once I found a bag of flour that had been dragged into the dinning room leaving a trail...I knew there had been a Midnight snack.
