Children's View From a Train

By Daisy on April 7, 2024 1:39 pm

Imagine two little toddlers looking out the window of a train, chattering and giggling as things fly by.
"Each a glimpse and gone forever!"--like childhood.

From A Railway Carriage

By Robert Louis Stevenson

Faster than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
And charging along like troops in a battle
All through the meadows the horses and cattle:
All of the sights of the hill and the plain
Fly as thick as driving rain;
And ever again, in the wink of an eye,
Painted stations whistle by.
Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,
All by himself and gathering brambles;
Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;
And here is the green for stringing the daisies!
Here is a cart runaway in the road
Lumping along with man and load;
And here is a mill, and there is a river:
Each a glimpse and gone forever!

This is beyond lovely. It sounds like a polished modern version of runescape music. I loved that game’s music. The only thing I’m not liking here is how short it is.

Beautifully composed and played. I like how the percussive elects mid way sound like the train rail when running and how some flutes accents sound like steam whistles!

Very peaceful and beautiful

I'm so glad you like this!  I am not familiar with Runescape Music.  I will have to look into that. Nice that you wanted it to be longer.  I always have material left over that didn't make the cut.  I save all the parts in a Score I call Bags of Glass--I can't seem to hit delete. ...

Thanks for your comments!  My process is very organic, and I don't really understand what I am composing until it is done. And, I often need a couple of days after I'm done, and suggestions from other people about what they hear in my piece!
I randomly thought about the Robert Louis Stevenson poem about a railway journey, that I used to read to my kids-- and then realized that this piece was a train trip of sorts.  The little whistle effects-- I still had no idea what those were until you mentioned it here!- Thanks! ---and  the syncopation I added midway, had no origin of any sort of train trip. I simply wanted that rhythm there. You are right -- does sound like the train running.

Thanks for listening!  I'm glad you found it peaceful!

A very exciting adventure, even if it's in the safety of a train. While childhood may go by as fast as the view, the wonder will always remain.
