Feel dat Flow (DOS EXE self-contained-synth)

By cTrix on January 17, 2016 4:06 pm

Greetings!  I'm back.

My mission was less than 100kb in self-contained-code (zipped).  This came out at 90kb! big_smile  It's my mission to make it a single EXE file and even smaller in the future ;-)
.
That 90kb Zip file includes:

- Play Routine as an EXE containing...
- Synth generators = Subtractive 3 osc with ring mod, LPF, HPF, LFO, Envolopes.
(Waves are sine, saw, square, triangle, noise bandwidth limited with correction for the Gibbs phenomenon)
- Filters include Moog-style ladder filters
- Channel Strip with EQ, Aux Sends, FX Processing
- Effects include reverb, delay, chorus, flange, bit-crush, exciter, distortion
- Mastering Engine has a multicomp, parametric EQ, and limiter stage; but limits to 0db :-P

Rendered out... 90kb becomes 75,000kb.  Or a data compression ratio of 1:833   This is an exact upload of the output.

The framework is provided by SaneStation^Excess (Sesse and titanstar).
.
If you have a Windows PC you can play the tune direct http://we.tl/gXe7C8qCpl  (please note the wav render option only works on XP, player works with some TLC on 7,8 & 10)

You're my new hero! heart

Nice song and incredible work on this!

Without words,

Naiky! big_smile

Super moving

So much awesome packed in a itty bitty living space. big_smile

wild. awesome work!

this is amazing man, the kind of stuff that makes me want to re-think my music making approach and venture into the unknown!

I wish you knew just how much of an inspiration you are to me! (Even though I have no idea what half the stuff you wrote means or how you even write music less than 100kb)

Melody reminds me a bit of Skaven, before it switches to Castlevania in the future XD ... definitely has this demoscene soul, quite literally

Amazing. You definitely brought it for week 2!

Heaps dope soaring melodies are heaps dope!

Also I still don't understand what you did there.
So, I get that you used SaneStation as the synth: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=59013
But how did you do the tracking and make it all into an exe? What's the process?

Fuck yes. Made even more fantastic by the process involved.

What time did you get to sleep? smile

This has such a solid build/composition/great elements in the track ... @90kb!!!.

It sure does sound like you too, Nice stuff smile

It essentially sequenced in Reaper with a very specific hierarchy of track stacking / channel management all talking back to a single VSTi instance.  Sounds were built from scratch (I couldn't find presets and didn't want to use any!) and then I used the built in engine to do the mixing / mastering.  I outputed a master collapsed-down MIDI from Reaper with all events in interleaved order.   That MID file then deciphered into the notedata with a tool.  The instrument programming was exported separately and compiled into the EXE from memory.  I then UPX'ed the exe and built batch files for WAV output and normal playback.  So nothing too tricky; and mostly "off the shelf".  It was my plan to do something in Visual C++ and make it a kkrunchy'd EXE but I don't have the full source for that.  (Maybe gonner talk to them about it)

Thanks for the comments peeps!!

Who says I've been to sleep?! ;-)  But actually started at 7pm, finished by about 4am... then awake till 7am buzzing from the vibes.  Got up 3 hours later and Mac blew up; lol.  Just starting my working day now (7pm)

That's my background for you though and though.  I'll maybe work it or something similar into a 64k demo later in the year if I can get access to source and make it small.  Plan on exploring 4klang more later in the year.

Well, that's the fun of Weekly Beats!  We're all here to keep it inspirational :-)

This is an amazing joint, cTrix. True respect to that demoscene spirit. It has a definitive OutRun-ish feel on it. Awesome work, seriously (The track is infectious).

I must try this one under Wine, and I'm wondering if DOS BOX supports that executable. Cross-platform rules smile

Man, this is awesome. Such a cool vibe from this song. I really have nothing but copious amounts of praise for this. big_smile

Mad vibes from this track. Wish I had a bit more technical knowledge on the production side to understand some of the tools.

beautiful work. very inspiring!

Great!! Very impressive work on this one! Loving the melodies, and the bass, and da beats... all of it is my favorite part !

I love the melody and intire song. Sounds very good. And I just forgot to say "Thank you for "A For Amiga" this album stuck in my ipod like forever)

Hahaha... yeah, I know, I realized that as soon as I hit play on that section after putting the notes in.  I left it in as a secret hommage, but you busted me there ;-)  FX2 a mega influence on me.

I know that feel.  My WB this week kinda had a hint of BEWM on FX1.  Cheers!
