Darker Outer Reaches (SNES and DJM450 live off hardware)

By cTrix on March 24, 2024 2:47 pm

1 x Super Nintendo (PAL) and a DJ mixer.  Played live at our bi-monthly Melbourne chip meet up known as "Melbourne Chip Tune Academy" where we have an open mic and everyone just gets up on stage and plays whatever for 10 mins each :-)  I finished the tune 30 seconds before ran out to the car and drove to the open mic... so hadn't actually done a full listen though!!  Played from a SNES + Flashcart on stage with a bit of mixer noodling for lols. (thanks Inty!)  Thanks to dot.AY for hosting... Jamatar for doing lighting... Tom Foolery for the live mix... audience for the heckles... and everyone for coming to the show!

Created with Elix SNES tool-chain (custom tracker / SPC compiler / replayer)

Fun fact: this tune take 62kb of memory including all samples + note data + replayer code.  It uses <0.1% CPU time while playing back because the SNES has a sound Co-processor dedicated to music playback which this uses.  Greets to Ferris (still loving this tool mate!)

banger! love the section starting at 2:00, such a good groove. and then the slightly dissonant lead at 03:35, what a vibe.

tell me more about this Elix tracker, have they released it publicly?

great work!

Sweet track, I started bouncing immediately at the 2min mark smile. Love that it's a live recording too!

can't lose with those gravelly SPC textures!  groove at 3:20 is especially aces.  glad u dusted off that SNES tracker even though chances of its release aren't that likely anymore...

hope to pop by the MCA meetup at some point in the future!  This time i'll present a workshop on How To Never Release Any Songs For At Least A Decade

Nice! I recently acquired a arduinoboy and my weekly is also chiptine. Nowhere near as cool as this. I'm just getting started using this kind of hardware.

love the live track! really nice atmosphere and energy for a wb. nice one

Not only are your tracks impressive, but the hardware choices are something else, too. It wouldn't ever occur to me to think "hey, I think I'm going to make a dope modern-sounding techno track on SNES". And you pulled it off. Wow.

"...so hadn't actually done a full listen though"... (;° ロ°)... I'm pretty sure that would send me into a full metal breakdown...

The track awesome too... I love the little reverby dungeon you dropped us in at around 3:06. Great way to allow for a texture change.  Amazing work.

This sounds incredible, love the intro too, haha

so dope. also hey i just got a 450 too myself
