Abletons and BBQs

By cTrix on June 24, 2012 5:12 pm

So tonight for weekly beats I went to a BBQ at Derris-Kharlan's new house where I met the very talented tiasu (another weekly beater!) and amongst many beers, I pulled out my laptop and got Dot.AY to show me how to use Ableton.   I still don't find the program that exciting and am still holding out for Bitwig Studio.   Anyway - even though it's a bit embarrassing, this is my first attempt at trying to use Ableton.  It's the APC20 version which came free with my controller so I was limited to 8 instruments and I also don't have any VST's so it's all the preset synths which suck a bit.  And one or two drum samples I pulled in from previous wb tunes.  I wrote both these while drinking beers with the guys here over about 3 hours then jammed on the tune with the APC-20 in a live take.  Simply recorded the output of Nathan's Presonus into my Tascam.    (couldn't figure out how to capture audio in Ableton!)

This is actually 2 x generic sounding tunes in one.   But generic is something I think that happens automatically when you are learning new software.

(radio coms sample is from NASA moon landing where the experience of walking on the moon is being broadcast)

This sounds amazing, so much better than last night!

Sounds pretty good for several beers in at a bbq.  I like the second half where it picks up.

Want to know something hilarious, cTrix? I've been at two events at the same time as you (and probably Dot.AY too) and not had the opportunity to meet due to your creating of most excellent works! It's hilarious! I blame myself for not just interrupting you.

This piece is great though, well done! Isn't the challenge of genericness in the to overcome the genericness?

Also, what do you generally use as a DAW?

Hey Vince!  Sorry I didn't get to meet you man - was probably well and truly in a corner with a laptop at that point! (the things we do for weekly beats).  Just woke up on Nathans floor.  Have a meeting with a client in 40 mins...(!!)

Hahaha, that's no worries. Next time, gadget, next time. Good luck with the meeting!

i wish all the WBers would come to my house.. but unfortunately all of the WBers live in AU and im in Southern california, USA

Psychedelic as fuck intro. Reminds me of the delirium years of Porcupine Tree. This tracks pretty good though, though I'm not a big fan of ableton myself

You're the man, (sea)trix. I particularly like the second half (post- wanky dance beat ; ), more cohesive somehow.

nice nice

Putting the able in ableton smile Nicely squelched.

pretty good for a jam! I feel the same way about ableton. I like it but, i prefer other programs. Bitwig does looks pretty neat. Beta test soon!
