Velociraptor

By CosmicCairns on November 24, 2020 8:16 pm

This is semi-structured, but also a semi-free noise jam.  It started with a weird voice mail I received that just said "Stay safe and stay home."  Then I noodled out a piano line and added some bass and guitar.  Then the real fun started when I started messing around with some feedback and making dinosaur noises.  I threw a bit of pan flute into the soup and the popcorn tin makes an appearance, although there's also some water bottle percussion.   I added a touch of vocals with lyrics I literally improvised in one take off the top off my head.  They're nothing super profound.  There's a velociraptor, see?  And he trapped her.  Who is she?  I have no idea, but it rhymed.  And by virtue of trapping her, he became her captor.  I could have developed this storyline more extensively, but I was feeling kind of lazy and also having way too much fun adding even more dinosaur noises, so it is what it is.

I love the way this song goes places. It feels really free and organic and I especially love the guitar stuff that comes in just after the 3:00 mark, and how it does its own thing over the top of that growl.

The whole thing reeks of mystery, the instruments feel mysterious and of course the velociraptor is a mystery. It should probably stay that way.

I like this sample to start the track. This track is a trip, it goes into different tangents, enjoying the feedback and the echoes et just general chaos. In a good way. We need more of these.

Thanks!  I didn't really know where this was going to go, so I just let it go where it went, if that makes sense.

Yeah, I don't think I'd want to become too overly familiar with a velociraptor.

As soon as I heard that message on my phone, I knew I had to use it somehow in a recording.  It was fun to just let this one go wherever it wanted to.  Thanks for the awesome gif, too.

This like Pink Floyd meet Butthole Surfers. I like that middle section where the heavy bass comes in followed by vocals. Pretty trippy. What a strange message to get on the phone, well would be strange any other year.  I like what you did with the recording of it.  Not sure I heard the dinosaurs but I don't know what a dinosaur sounds like. I did hear that pop corn tin though!

I guess I don't really know what a dinosaur sounds like either since I've never actually seen one, but I made a bunch of growling sounds just vocally, which ended up being super fun to do.

very interesting! Somehow rather claustrophobic... or perhaps it is just a reflection of the times we live in. Very impressive trip, nevertheless...

Woah that is certainly one mysterious voicemail.  Like the neighborhood AI is trying to warn you yikes    Some sweet shredding guitar lines in this one that fit nicely with the dino percussion.  The piano adds to the mystery with the ostinato line.  Hopefully the voicemails don't progress into anything creepy smile

I think the ominous voice message as well as the dinosaur lurking around somewhere in the mix probably contribute to the feeling.  It definitely feels of our time to me.

I'm assuming that voicemail was some sort of public service message, but it came with no explanation and that's the message in its entirety.  It was pretty weird.  Definitely don't need any creepier voicemails.

awesome and creepy voice mail

I might be hungry, but I saw the words - jam, noodle, soup, popcorn, pan (cooking), water bottle

This track is a MEAL.

On this track, along with many of your others, you are very effective in using stereo/mono/panning so it feels like you're in the middle of a practice space while a band jams around you.  very nice smile

Thanks!  I think it's fun to play around with panning.  I don't always know what the heck I'm doing exactly, but sometimes you get interesting results that way.  Also I'm sure a velociraptor would love to make a meal out of us, so maybe the subliminal food messages really do mean something.

Semi-structured and semi-free is good spot, a descriptor for our existence perhaps? Great use of sample voice mail. I think I do hear the dinos. Good idea to stay home, viruses, dinos ... it's a mad world. I really like where you take this, it goes fun places!

Thanks!  I think I was feeling the flow we talked about.  It flowed somewhere a little strange, but I'm all good with it!

That's kind of mesmerizing how it keeps swinging back and forth.  Plus it sort of looks like the raptor is singing.

I didn't intentionally channel Dinosaur Jr. but it certainly is appropriate if that's what ended up happening.  I actually got that voicemail a while ago and I've been saving it for the right time.  Apparently it's still being sent out.

So he essentially became a velocicaptor!  The velocicaptor and his velociraptor.

Very cool searing guitar tones with the softer vocals.

Yeah, sometimes I think a contrast between harsher guitars and softer vocals can be cool.  Plus, I'm not the best screamer.  Although it is fun to try screaming sometimes.
