Ultima Thule

By CosmicCairns on November 17, 2020 7:52 pm

I recently watched a Nova episode about the New Horizons mission.  The first half of it was mostly about the flyby of Pluto, which was itself totally awesome.  Then the second half was about what came next.  They didn't actually have a concrete plan, but it was a situation like we've got this spacecraft out here in a region we're probably not going to revisit anytime soon, we know there are a ton of other objects out here, let's see if we can find one and go visit it.  They ended up successfully flying by a peanut shaped object only about 36 km long that they nicknamed Ultima Thule.  It is currently the furthest object from Earth that a human-made spacecraft has flown by at close range.  The fact that they were able to find an object they didn't even know existed, pinpoint where its location would be at the correct time, alter the course of the New Horizons spacecraft to intercept it, and beam pictures back to Earth is really amazing to me.  I'm in awe of human ingenuity, which is good to remember because there are far too many times I find myself in awe of human stupidity.  Anyway, this is my humble little musical tribute.

Thats wild dude, makes you wonder how we can do cool stuff like that but fail so miserably at basic things.  Sweet song though man, love the epic intro.  Fits the theme perfectly.

It seems like we're capable of doing amazing things when we work together towards a common purpose, so it's really a shame that we seem to spend so much time at odds with each other.

This is a timeless epic song, especially the intro and the intro of the intro. Love the synth and guitar you played completely freestyle. Only a spaceman like you gets to that point. And when you sing in multible tracks it is becomes heavenly beautiful. In this tribute song, I can hear also a tribute to velvet underground, can, spacemen3 and the beach boys. hammermäßig.

Super spacey tune. Love that ripping guitar lead in the middle.  It has great tone and contrast to the underlying track. Slightly detuned with the synths, it turns into a laser beam at certain sustained parts. Second half is like space aged Beach Boys!!! Dig the vocals.  Soo good smile

Thanks!  The guitars and synths felt like they were propelling me through space so I just rode them and then the vocal section kind of felt like arriving at the destination or something.

I had a lot of fun with that guitar part.  And then I always did think the Beach Boys would sound good in space.

It's extra amazing if you factor in the time and effort it takes for commands to get through. The distance is huge, goes super fast and has to deal with a lot of interference. I guess you could say the one saving grace is that there's a lot of space for error, like literally.

Great tune, too.

Oh yeah, the fact that they were able to accomplish all of this from, like, billions of miles away is for sure a big part of the amazement factor.

I love the background idea of the track. The different sections of the track make this like an epic journey. The guitar layers are really awesome.

Thanks!  I was definitely inspired by the epic journey the real life spacecraft took to get there.

I love the mood those opening melodies set, beautiful! Dig how this progresses, getting spacier / wilder as the voyage progresses. The vox were certainly worth waiting for! I love that image of Beach Boys in space. Would never think of the in space, but the image works. Great creation!

Thanks!  We definitely had to make the journey to get to where the Beach Boys were waiting for us in space!  smile

HOly hell those guitar melodies along side the various spacey sounds you got going on are great as a combo.

The guitars in this are fantastic, and I loved having the inspiration for the track floating around in my head while I listened to it. The last third is a real joy of a surprise. smile

Thanks!  I liked the way those guitars and synths meshed.

I was keeping it in mind as I recorded the track as well.  I did feel like there needed to be something "special" when we reached the destination.

Excellent guitar work that goes well with the pulsing piano.  Really gives that spacey feeling that climaxes nicely into the victorious vocal section.  The vocal harmonies are really cool with the guitar too.  Well done!

Thanks!  The guitar and synth combo just felt like a good recipe for a space voyage to me.

love the lasers.  loved the noise jam that gave way to the soft chords and singing.  The whole piece kind of felt like violently breaking through the atmosphere and then ending up floating in space.

also to +1 on the amazing power of groups working together (like WB!)

Thanks!  I was kind of going for that journey with an ultimate destination in mind type of feel.  And yeah, people can accomplish really, really amazing things when they work towards a common goal.
