Fool's Gold Miner

By CosmicCairns on February 13, 2018 4:44 pm

In the past I've always preferred to record late at night.  It just seemed like the creative juices flowed better then.  These days with the way my schedule is, I generally don't have a choice but to record during the daytime.  But I had an opportunity to do a late night recording this week as my girlfriend happened to be out of town and then I got an unexpected day off from work the next day.  So the basic song itself flowed out of me relatively quickly and I was pretty happy with it.  I made my first mix and it felt like it was REALLY close, but just not quite there.  So I thought I'd go back and tweak a little and mix it down again.  Once again the same thing happened, although it sounded different and tantalizingly close, it just felt a little off.  So I tweaked again and the same thing happened again.  And so began the great tweak-a-thon of 2018.  It just kept feeling so close and yet no matter what I did it wasn't quite right.  The next thing I knew it was almost 5 am, I was having trouble keeping my eyes open as I sat in my chair, and I'd completely blown my eardrums out from listening to the same damn song repeatedly.  And then when I finally did try to go to bed I had trouble sleeping because I was still thinking about the song and my mind wouldn't stop running.  As a result I felt like absolute crap the next day, my ears still felt tired of the stupid song and it was like I couldn't even hear it as anything other than noise anymore.  So I decided to just let it be what it is.  Lessons learned from this experience:  I'm getting too old to pull all-nighters, and it's much better to just walk away early on and come back with fresh ears the next day even if you think you're super close than to wear your ears out by overplaying a song.

The elusive mother-lode. Final result sounds good to me.

Another Nice song. Love the detuned piano smile it adds character to the track!

The song has all what a song needs to be perfect. The vocals, the breaks, the solos on guitar, the mix, ...
Everything hits the spot. I think you just had an overdose of musical nightshift. For me your best number this year.

Thanks!  Now that I'm re-listening a couple days later with fresher ears, I still see some stuff I could nitpick, but that's true every week!

Thanks!  I do like to try to find a few little touches like that to make things a little more interesting.

I appreciate that.  I really do feel like my creativity flows better at night, I just got too caught up in the tweaking and then got tired.  Both sleepy tired and ear tired.

Care to dance m'lady? (Puts down jug of beer)... She lifts her big puffy dress above her ankles in jest. We smile and dance merrily... Everyone is sweaty, laughing and in great spirits... Twas a night to remember

Such an appropriate title it is.

Try to listen to it again in two years, you'll love it again.

One of these songs wich are just lovely...
I really enjoy that happy piano (ding ding ding) and that claps awesome big_smile

Oh man i really know that... girl is out of town you have so much time and start working on something.. forget to eat.. it gets later and later and you don't know if you should eat or sleep you feel like crap and have the feeling that you're not finished your project. Happens to me most on electronic projects, i have a bunch of not quite finished diy synth wink

But this song is really good and i think your night was a success!

Fantastic tune! Those hand claps hit the spot once they come in and I really dig your vocal melody. I feel ya on over tweaking...once you get the urge to "fix" something, it's hard to shake... You're rocking it, though!

I can picture that scene quite clearly!

Yeah, I'm sure you're right about that.  It already sounds a little better to me.

Yeah, nothing seems to eat up time for me more than recording.  I'll get in the zone and next thing I know hours have passed.  It's cool, but also a little scary!

Thanks!  Yeah, I've found when you try to hard to achieve perfection, you usually don't.  And sometimes the imperfections are what make a song most interesting.  I'm sure I'll get stuck in tweak mode again though.  It's inevitable.  smile

Thanks for listening!  Yeah, I'm sure we've all been there with the over-tweaking at some point.  Goes with the territory I guess.  smile

Lovely chord progression, especially with the strums and solo towards the end.  I know personally ear fatigue can be physically and mentally draining. But sometimes just a fresh ear is all it takes smile  nice job!

Yeah, I get obsessed with finishing but really the best thing you can do is come back later with fresh ears.  Thanks for listening!

Yeah, final result sounds good! I really relate to your story, I felt the frustration as I read it. So tempting to stay up and pull the all nighter, or half nigher even, and so rarely work it in the long run. All about the the fresh ears and fresh mind body and soul. All the good creative stuff seems to come from sleep anyway. This is a nice song, like the lyrics.

Thanks!  The older I get the more I realize the importance of sleep!
