Dogs of Braewood

By CosmicCairns on June 3, 2020 6:53 pm

These are truly crazy times we're going through.  I feel almost a personal responsibility to stay engaged with the news and everything that's going on, but I'm trying to allow myself a little bit of mental escapism so I don't become completely overwhelmed.  So this song is a celebration of my dogs (Braewood is our street and also what we sometimes call our house.)

I actually had a kind of profound moment with my dog George recently.  I was sitting up in bed, ostensibly trying to read before going to sleep, but my mind was churning and starting to go down a negative spiral.  I remember actually kind of questioning if any forces of good and benevolence even existed in the world and George took that moment to step forward and gently touch his forehead against mine.  He's a very empathetic doggy.  And also a tiny little force of goodness all to himself.  He instantly snapped me out of my negative feedback loop and made me feel better.

I also have to give my girlfriend a co-writing credit on this one.  She was singing to the dogs, just making up a song on the spot and I was like "Hey, that's kind of catchy.  Can I use that?"  So I expanded the melody a little and wrote more lyrics.  I kind of imagined them as some kind of superheroes taking on evil and vanquishing it.  It's been awhile since the popcorn tin has made an appearance so I busted it out to provide the percussion.  I also got some sounds of their collars jingling and got a sample of them barking at the end by pretending to leave the house while leaving the microphone running.

It's definitely important to stay focused on everything that's happening, but my 3 dogs are for sure helping to keep me sane, so I felt they deserved a tribute.  We have a cat, too, but she was aloof about being roped into the same song as the dogs.  Maybe she'll get her own song later.  Stay safe and sane out there everyone and hug your furry friends, if you've got 'em!

All hail the dogs of Braewood
As they head forth marching cross the square
All hail the dogs of Braewood
As they battle evil everywhere
All hail the dogs of Braewood
They bring good vibes everywhere they go
All hail the dogs of Braewood
As they wag their tails to and fro
All hail the dogs of Braewood
They'll send all the bad guys on the run
All hail the dogs of Braewood
Always there for you when the day's done

Awesome job to both of you, getting some real Fleet Foxes vibes from this. Both lyrically and with the vocal harmonies.  Love the steady rhythmic theme throughout, really keeps it moving

Great one! I feel like I"m marching along with the dogs, spreading the good vibes. I think the guitar lead is what really spreads those good vibes for me, nice lines. Your dogs sound like a good creature. Dogs are pretty great. Cats too. They both make me feel good. Someday your cat will get a great aloof song it deserves I'm sure. I'll toast to a little escapism, cheers!

Good to get some good vibes these days... nice work!

I like the bass on this one. smile . If it can make you feel better, I am almost not looking at - reading news at all since maybe 2 weeks after the covid 19 situation started to be big here in Montreal. (So it has been more than 1 1-2 months) I do remote work from home, stay here, take it easy and that's it...

Thanks!  I felt from the get-go it needed some kind of marching rhythm so I just kind of tapped it out on my old popcorn tin.

Dogs (and cats) really are great.  They're good at calming me down when I feel stressed and they're just pleasant to have around.  I don't know what I'd do without them.

I tried to cut back on news after the covid first started since that seemed to be the only thing the news was talking about.  I've been trying to pay a little more attention to all the protests because I think they're really important and I've also been worried about how the government will respond to them.  But yeah, if I pay attention to the news 24/7 it just stresses me out and sends me on negativity spirals, so I'm trying to find the right balance.

All hail the cosmic cairns

All hail the cosmic cairns
As he battels boredom everywhere
All hail the cosmic cairns
Weeklybeats is where he belongs
All hail the cosmic cairns
As he plays his gorgeous songs
All hail the cosmic cairns
He will send all the bad vibes on the run
All hail the cosmic cairns
Always there for you when the day's done

Great job, vocals are a little low, but everything's in sync.

Also, if you're watching the news at any point, you're in for a bad time. Sometimes it's best to just not watch the news.

Thanks for the alternative lyrics!  I couldn't help but give it a listen and sing along with the new lyrics.

I totally agree and usually try to minimize my news consumption.  I mean I like to pay enough attention that I'm not totally ignorant as to what's happening, but I generally don't flip to any news channels for an extended period of time.  Things just seem extra momentous right now so I feel like I want to keep a little closer tabs than normal, but it's still a good idea to get away from it a bit, too.  And I totally do.

Great track! Not sure what you're are doing differently, but this is mixed and mastered differently and is veery strong.  Even the popcorn tin is sounding more beefy.  Love the harmonies and warm tone of the bass. Like the round, staggering in the vocals in some sections.  Nice guest vocalist at the end!

Thanks!  I wish I could say I knew exactly what I did differently, but I'm very trial and error with my production.  Sometimes I feel like I can't get a satisfactory mix no matter what I do and sometimes I think I just get ear fatigue and can't tell anymore.  I also run all my tracks through LANDR and it does whatever the heck it does, which I swear isn't always the same from week to week.  Those guest vocals took a bit of work to coax out.  I thought I could get them to make some noise by bringing them in the room, but they wouldn't cooperate, so finally I just walked out the front door while leaving the microphone running and that elicited some barks.

Very cheery piece and the sampling adds a lot to it.  Nice one.

Same on the mixing front for me.  Results vary widely and not always sure why.  Your dog vocal production techniques are cutting edge though.  My dog totally loses his shit every time the mailman drops mail through the door so I would just have to wait until 1:00 on any weekday smile

Mixing/mastering is an area where I still feel like there's so much to learn.  I guess that's the thing about music that's fun and frustrating at the same time.  There's always more to learn.  There's also always more equipment to acquire.  smile

You always have an entertaining backstory for your tracks.  I definitely relate to that overwhelming feeling and needing to escape.  I was happy to hear the opening start right off with the happy popcorn tin!  Catchy vocal melodies and really cool use of the doagie collars and barking.  Pets are great for these times.  I only have my cat but she's always a good distraction when I find myself feeling extra down. Keep up the good work!

Pets really are the best.  I've had dogs and cats throughout my life.  They're very different, but they're both great.  They're good at calming me down and they also help me come up with songs sometimes because I can sing to them without feeling self-conscious.
