Broken Monkey (2018)

By CosmicCairns on March 7, 2018 9:01 pm

This is a new recording of a song I originally did on 4-track back in around 2003.  The main thing I tried to do different this time was use more real cello.  I still used a little bit of synths, but I used only cello for the main instrumental breakdowns.

I can understand actually why I chose to use synths the first time around.  The fretless fingerboard on a cello requires very precise finger placement, and it's especially difficult as you get higher up on it and the notes get super close together.  I'm unfortunately a little bit rusty on the cello.  When I was in school I played in the orchestra and took private lessons and could play Bach suites by memory.  It was my best instrument.  But that was a long time ago and I've gotten lazy about practicing and keeping up my chops.  It's a little like riding a bike in that when I pick it up it still feels natural and I can start playing something right away, but my skills have deteriorated considerably.  As such, it took quite a few tries to get it close to what I wanted, especially the high notes.  I'm still not 100% satisfied, but I'm okay with where I ended up.  I will definitely need to bust out the cello more this year.

In case you're interested for comparison's sake I've posted the original recording of the song here.  I digitized it back around 2004 and it lost a little something in the transition from analog, but since I don't know where the original cassette is anymore I'm much happier to have any version of it than no version at all.

Actually, pretty good cello (I have the same not-precticing problem). Original version is damn fine as well.

This song is niiiice!
I love the cello interludes... they add an awesome mood.

What a beautiful song. Both versions are worth listening and have their special quality. The new version is super-stereo and nice with the real cello. The lofi-version brings more classic-baroque feel into the interlude, even it is a synth. And I love the flute as well, only heared it in the old version.
I do understand the cello is hard to play, because I try it from time to time too, but do not get any usable results.

It's scary how quickly ability at an instrument erodes from lack of practice! My piano chops get noticeably rusty after not playing for 6 weeks over the summer holidays. The cello playing might not be up to the level you'd like, but the "imperfect" sound of it definitely adds something here.

Agree, cello sounds good and this is a lovely song. As a drummer I mainly notice stamina and endurance going first after lack of practice.

Thanks for listening to both versions!  Yeah, I like my cello but practicing enough to stay actually good at it takes a lot of work!

Thanks.  The cello interludes are sort of the selling point of the song for me.

Thanks!  I wanted the remake to be similar but not a complete slavish recreation to the original.  I suppose I could have altered it even more, but I just felt like doing some minor adjustments this time.  Cello is hard for sure, but I used to be so much better at it!

Yeah, rust can set in surprisingly fast.  But I think it's also possible to shake it off if you put in a little work.  Although I don't think I'll be joining any orchestras anytime soon, so I still might not get quite back where I was!

Yeah, I've noticed that stamina and endurance thing, too.  My hand can get really tired pretty quickly while playing the cello, whereas I used to be able to get through whole symphonies back in the day.

I always wondered what your music would sound like if it wasn't drowning in reverb, I guess now I know.

Excellent guitar playing that has a bit of an old west feel to it.  I dig how the cello replies to your vocals towards the end too.  Nice job!

So good to hear this tune again! It's epic and awesome. Excellent songwriting. I look forward to hearing more cello this year.

So... needs more reverb.  Duly noted.

Thank you.  Yeah, I kind of liked that cello response thing.

Yeah this one totally dates back to the green tree days.  It was fun to re-visit it.

I don't know about that, but it is most certainly less distinctly your style you've been using for most of your tenure here.

Wow. Fantastic song and excellent arrangement and instrumentation. Nice nice nice

That's an interesting observation... I really didn't set out to make this "different" so it's cool to hear that it is.  I'm sort of hoping to bust out of whatever "mode" I'm currently in several times throughout this year.

Hey thanks for listening.  I really appreciate that.  I'm really coming around to the whole "arrangement" side of music so it's cool that you mentioned that.  It makes me feel like I'm sort of on the right track.
