Zzyzx Road

By Cosmic Cairns on July 20, 2022 10:28 pm

Zzyzx Road is a real place in the middle of the desert near Baker, California just off the highway in between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.  So basically in the middle of nowhere.  I went there on a day trip many years ago and it's a kind of interesting place.  The reason anything is there at all is because there's a natural mineral spring in the area.  Back in the 1940's a huckster bought like 12,000 acres of land in the area and turned it into a health spa.  He called it Zzyzx because he wanted to have the last word in the dictionary.  From what I gather it was basically a scam, but he managed to keep it going until the mid-70's before the government cracked down on it and took the land back.

Nowadays the site is used as a Desert Studies Center for a group of California State Universities, but they only use some of the buildings so a lot of it is just kind of sitting there abandoned.

For this song I decided to pretend as if the health spa were still there and make the lyrics a sort of advertising jingle for it.  It's nearly 50 years too late to go to the health spa, but you can still visit the site.  It just won't have any of the benefits promised by the song.  Not that it ever did, but it's fun to pretend.

I don't know but I've been told
You'd better take a trip on down to Zzyzx Road
Where you'll take a rest
Get yourself refreshed

Zzyzx Road is the place to be
Come on and take a dip in the mineral springs
And relax all night
Get your head on right

Out in the desert where the sun always shines
It's sure to put you in a better state of mind
And soon you'll see
You'll be worry free

Come on in get yourself on track
If you're not satisfied you'll get your money back
That's a guarantee
So put your mind at ease

Zzyzx Road will be your second home
And you won't want to go
Anywhere else at all
And you'll see Zzyzx Road is everything they say
And there's no other place
As nice to get away

Let's go!

The background to the place feels like a fantastic setting for a novel. I really like the way your song gives the whole place a bright feel even though, as you mentioned, it was essentially a scam. It reminds me of the positivity you sometimes come across in the Fallout games.

very interesting backgroundstory. love the composition and the extended ah-ah-ah-ahs and oh-oh-oh-ohs not mentioned in the lyrics.

I imagine this was the sort of thing that was said about the place when it was operational.  But I also like to imagine the idea of a spa that really has those kinds of benefits.  And I've always loved the name Zzyzx.  I agree it could be a good setting for a novel.  I could picture some kind of wrap around story that takes place in the present day where someone's visiting the abandoned ruins and then it flashes back to during its heyday and some sort of high jinks ensue.

Thanks!  I like the ah's and oh's, too, but I always feel a tiny bit silly writing that out in a lyric sheet.  smile

Nice performance, shame the place doesn't exist, it sounds like a blast

oh such a happy-day song! and yet there's a bit of sadness to it, too, but with a playfulness that stands out by this unique establishment of vibe and in its simplistic and playful lyrics(so perfect!)... really love the long and winding crooning in both the voice and synths that appear near the middle, and then lead the track out: works like a grand exit big_smile

I'd go there now if I could.

Thanks.  The croon-synth combo felt like an essential element to me.

Loved the wo o wo o wo o wo o wo o bit btw! big_smile

I learned something new today, too!  I wasn't familiar with Zzyzx bikes, but I looked them up and it turns out they're named after the same place.  They even have this picture of the road sign on their website:

Today I enjoyed a ComsicCairns track and learnt a random fact about Zzyzx Road, including how to pronounce it because I would never have figured it out. It's such a CosmicCairns track. I love it.

let go oooh ohh oooh ohh oooooooooh smile

I didn't know how to pronounce it either until I visited it.  I've taken many road trips to California over the years and that road sign always fascinated me because it was such a strange name and in such a seemingly random place.  When an opportunity came up to visit the Desert Studies center there, I jumped on it.

Just got back from a trip to California a few weeks ago.  I think saw this exact view or some very similar to it.  Passing the Zzyzx Road sign on the way home made me think I should write a song about it.

I really enjoyed the chorus ooohs and ahhs.  It easily gave the song a catchy hook that has you humming along.  The orchestration of synths and strings has a celebratory feel to it especially after reading your background story.  "Come celebrate Zzyzx with us this upcoming imaginary weekend!"

I kind of wish I could go back in time and make this the actual theme song for the health spa.  Thanks for listening!

Love the surfy guitar riffing.  It's different than your styles that I'm used to hearing and works really well with the roadtrip vibe.  I like the warbly vocal motif you start in the middle and then pick up in the guitars. Very clever! And let. That. Be. The. Last. Word.

...but definitely an awesome track!

Thanks!  Yeah it was fun to have the guitars kind of echo the vocals on that warbly part.

"Come and take a rest / get yourself refreshed" is going to be in my head all week. Excellent writing throughout.

Thanks! I hope that's a good sentiment to have stuck in your head!

What a happy fun trip, classic CC. Fun to learn about this odd places with super interesting. The world is full of these places and their stories. I think I've seen that bike brand around. The desert is magic and scary. I love being up in WA state since we have desertish and rainforesting and in between, can kind of see it all in a few days which is a trip.

I like odd little places like this with weird backstories.  And they really are everywhere.  This and being able to see different types of landscapes really help to make the world a more interesting place.
