Zenith

Wow.  Another year down the hatch.  And what a year this one was.  Congratulations to everyone who made it to the finish line.  And if you didn't make it to the finish line but participated in any capacity along the way to still deserve congratulations for being creative this year.  Any creative productivity is good.  So congratulations!

I'm happy I managed to do all 52 weeks again this year.  I even managed to pull off a little fun game with my song titles.  I noticed there are 26 letters in the alphabet, which happens to be half of 52, so it would be possible to start a title with every letter of the alphabet twice.  So I started with a "Z" song in week 1, worked my way backwards down the alphabet until I hit "A" in week 26, did another "A" song in week 27 and then went back up the alphabet ending with another "Z" song in week 52.  It was mostly an exercise for fun, but it actually proved kind of useful to my process and inspiration as it gave me a direction to follow.  In past years some weeks I was kind of like "what the heck do I want to do or write about this week?"  This year I knew whatever I was doing had to start with a specific letter and since I sometimes like to brainstorm song titles in advance anyway I could pick something off the list that began with the letter I needed.  In some cases I was able to give some pre-thought as to what a song with a particular title might sound like so I already had some vague ideas before I even started.  Also it was another way to kind of know where I was "at" in the year.  I realize week numbers work pretty well, but it was another way to visualize it.  I knew I was over the hump so to speak when I was working my way back up the alphabet and knowing how far up or down the alphabet I was gave me a good sense of the year's progress.  Anyway, it ended up being useful for me and maybe I'll do it again next time.

So what are your plans for 2021?  Are you burned out on music?  Need a break?  I was feeling like I had gotten into a good creative rhythm as the year went on and initially I thought I'd just try to keep it going into the new year.  But as the end of the year approached and I started looking back, I realized if you do all 52 weeks you end up with a LOT of material and there's definitely some stuff I did this year that I really liked.  I think I'd like to put together at least two albums utilizing songs from this year.  Rushing a track out every week is great for productivity, but objectively speaking, they could certainly use a little polishing up.  I've decided I want to devote some time to trying to improve my mixing skills and then I want to pick about 12 songs for album #1 and do complete start-from-scratch remixes on them.  After that I'll probably take a break or work on new music or other creative pursuits for a bit and then later in the year I may try to compile and remix a second album.  At least that's my plan for right now.

In the meantime, I'd love to continue to support everyone in your creative efforts, whatever they may be.  If you've got anything you want me to like or follow or listen to or whatever, let me know in the comments.  I'm not the biggest fan of social media and I generally would prefer less of it in my life as opposed to more, but I also see it as kind of a necessary evil.  I finally broke down and got a Twitter account just recently.  It was actually because of a fiction writing project that got me to do it, but I'll use it as my music account also.  I was going to name it after my writing persona "Wuckster" but someone else already took it.  @CosmicCairns was available so I grabbed it.  I've had a band page on facebook for a while now, although I haven't done too much with it.  I'm not on instagram as of right now, but I suppose I could join it if it seems worthwhile.  I do post all my albums on bandcamp and I guess they have a "follow" feature now.  I haven't delved into spotify or any other streaming sites yet, but that's something I might look into in 2021.  At any rate if you wanted to like or follow any of the above, that would be cool, and like I said I'd be happy to return the favor.  Here's the links for my various sites:

Jeez, this is a lot of stuff and I haven't even gotten to this week's song.  I called it Zenith, both to fulfill my "Z" word title and to optimistically feel like I'm going out on a high point.  Lyrically I got into a bit of a reflective mood and wrote about appreciating those that are close to us.  Musically, I started out with a choir sample and reversed it because I was curious what a backwards choir would sound like.  It sounds surprisingly similar to a forwards choir, but I liked the vibe of it so I built around that for the intro.  Then I got to the main body of the song where the lyrics kick in along with some prominent cello, and then for balance sake I added an extended instrumental outro.  Anyway WB has definitely been one of the best parts of this messed up year and has helped keep my sanity intact.  Good luck on your future endeavors.  Let me know where I can follow you at in 2021, otherwise hopefully I'll catch you all back here in 2022.

All of the atoms in every star
Still wouldn't fill up the void left in our hearts
By all the things that get lost to time
Everything eventually gets left behind

But it was all worth it just to have known you
Just for the instant that we both passed through
It might all be random but I'm glad you were here
I felt less lost just by having you be near

All of our memories might leave with us
Everything eventually gets turned to dust
Even the whole universe will go
As if it never existed at all

None of it in time will even be missed
How could it be when nobody exists?
Still I'll remember as long as I can
If this is all there is I'm still glad it happened

Backwards everything! Love it

I like the choir work during the intro and how the intro then fades into a more guitar grounded track. The alphabet trick was a great idea!

I like the idea of going back to tracks done this year, polishing them and putting an album out. On the other hand, Weekly beats has opened a door into the crazy aether to pull songs out of it, i feel it'd be a shame to close it, so i'll try to continue going at this pace. smile

What a beautiful track. You are the last beach boy existing. The intro and outro are so nice and fragile with the guitar crying. Your talent for epic meaningful lyrics is proven here as well. A very well zenith done.
I am unfortunately not working with social medias, as I told before, I prefer analog physical real and true connections. Maybe it is old-fashioned and unsexy to have a recordcollection at home, an old computer without plugins-software, 1000 effectsstomps on the floor, but I am afraid of virtual reality and the matrix. What will happen to your livework, if the www will crash and everything breaks down?
I hope I find the time to produce some of my selfmade polycarbonate record lathe and still see what you are doing on facebook as well. Stay healthy and creative and such a lovely person. Best wishes for the future.

Wow, beautiful track to end the year with. Happy to hear the cello make an appearance in the the finale along with some new sounds and effects like that very subtle choir. It's been great jamming through these 52 weeks with you.  Please stay in touch with any new projects.  Maybe you can shoot a scifi short film for the Brooklyn SciFi Film Fest or contribute a track for the comp, or both smile Lots of first time filmmakers and you have the added benefit of being a story teller.  Maybe see you back in 2022?

Also, forgot to mention that the title naming sequence is a great idea smile I guess I'm not much aof a code breaker or puzzle master to not see it unfold.  Zenith is the perfect end name as well!

Thanks a bunch for all the generous comments this year. Congratulations! Wish you the best for 2021!

I'm always curious what things sound like backwards.  Sometimes the results are really cool and sometimes less so, but it's always fun to find out.

It was a tough call for me.  There was part of me that really wanted to see how much I could maintain the pace of churning out songs and it really does scratch the creative itch to produce so much new material.  This was my 4th time doing WeeklyBeats so I'm pretty certain I have the capacity to be prolific.  I think I can tap into it again when the time comes.  When I objectively self-assess what areas I could use improvement in, I think I could benefit from slowing down a little for right now and working on upping my production game.  I do hope to still create a decent number of new songs in 2021 and then hopefully return to WB in 2022 with some more tricks in my toolbox.

I have some really mixed feelings about social media.  Mostly negative ones actually.  I don't really post a super lot on the ones I have. And I agree, I grew up in an analog world and there's a lot about it I still prefer.  I share the fear of the internet one day disappearing and taking all your music with it, but I've also had some physical cassette tapes get lost or damaged over the years, so they've effectively disappeared as well.  I kind of think it's probably best to have a combination of both.  I kind of like having a bandcamp page since it sort of serves as an extra online backup and also it's convenient tp point people to if they express interest in hearing your music.  But nothing probably sounds as good as hearing it on vinyl.  Anyway, best wishes to you, too!

Thanks!  I felt it was appropriate to end the year with a track that featured cello prominently.  It's ultimately my secret weapon I think.  They've got virtual strings sounding pretty good nowadays, but I still think a real cello is unmatchable.  I will definitely submit a track (or two) for your comp.  Trying to make a film sounds fun but also really daunting.  I'll give it some thought and see if any kind of inspiration strikes.  I'm already planning on devoting a decent amount of time to remixing possibly two albums worth of material and then I neglected working on writing my 4th book for most of 2020, so I need to get back to that also.  All that on top of working my day job.  But you never know!  I really do think it would be fun to try.

I wondered if anyone would spot the pattern along the way, but at the same time I personally often just scan the current week's tracks and don't necessarily study people's whole list of songs for the year.  But maybe I should start doing that.

Thanks!  And likewise.  I hope 2021 is creatively rewarding for you.  And rewarding in general.

Oh, I just saw you grabbed one of my albums off bandcamp.  Thanks!  That one's a compilation of tracks from WeeklyBeats past.  Nothing from this year, but it's got stuff from 2014, 2016, and 2018.

Lovely song. A journey. Ending on a zenith indeed. The choir sounds amazing. Great lyrics. Change, endings and beginnings. The cello is sweet. Great harmonies. I want to sing along at a campfire. Congrats on another year of creativity! Have enjoyed your songs each week. Thanks for the consistent and generous comments! I like your message above: any creative productivity is good! And wow, that's super creative game with the song titles, I had no idea! In 21, I'll also be polishing up some WB songs and releasing, trying out some more video creations and seeing where the muse leads me. I follow you on Bandcamp, will link up in the other places too. Agree on social media, not a big fan, but a necessary evil, and if it can lead to some sort of community, then that's good! See you around!

I agree.  The community aspect is really nice and I like Orange Drink's idea of a Cosmic Miracles collab.  I would be down for giving that a try sometime.  I liked your facebook page and I follow you on bandcamp as well. I'll check out your other links, too, so hopefully I will see you around in 2021.  Cheers!

Nice use of the choir along with your vocals.  Really epic feeling throughout like the credits are about to roll feeling smile  You went extra Cosmic on that outro with the calming pads and guitar.  It's been a fun year again listening to your tracks.  Followed ya on Twitter!  I hope you have a great new year!

What a lovely song, the gentle choir is very welcome and then it goes back to a heartfelt moment.

That alphabet thing is something that's happened before, I did it in 2016 (except a-z-a), but I believe there've been others as well. I know that OneZero did something like it with his titles the last two runs (first the elements, then the numbers themselves).

Next year I'll do 12 EPs, it won't be much work, it'll still be through my generator.

If you want, you can join us on Discord, but since you're cutting back, I reckon we won't see you there any time soon, or not for an extended duration anyway.

Nevertheless, you've got a nice message going here. Keep reaching for the stars.

I just wanted to go out on a nice pleasant vibe.  I had the first two sections done and I knew I wanted a third and it sort of just materialized itself.  Thanks for the Twitter follow, I followed you back!

Thanks!  I'm not totally surprised someone else has thought to title their songs in some alphabetic pattern.  The only thing that seemed of cool significance to me is that there's exactly half as many letters in the alphabet as weeks in the year.  I never noticed that before.  I think title patterns in general are kind of fun.  Maybe I'll do a-z-a next time or maybe try to come up with some sort of different pattern.  Good luck going forward.  Perhaps I'll stick my nose in the Discord sometime.  Otherwise I think I'll most likely be back for 2022.
