You Said What to Who?

By Cosmic Cairns on June 1, 2022 9:44 pm

My computer went down for a few days and I couldn't get it to turn on.  I eventually resolved the situation by installing a new internal power supply and got it up and running.  In the meantime before I knew if that was going to solve the issue or how long it might take to figure out what was going on I was able to borrow a MacBook from my better half.  I took advantage of the opportunity to try out using GarageBand for the first time.  I've always heard good things about it, but I've never tried it out.

So I sat on the couch with my dog curled up next to me and just jumped in and banged this thing out using sounds that come with GarageBand.  Other than a few things that are just different from what I'm used to, I found it pretty intuitive to use overall and the sound library is pretty cool.  It's good to know I have it as a backup option if my primary computer ever crashes again.

It's good that from that accident you got something useful. There are some good sounds there! You now have a good plan B in case of a zombie apocalypse.

Sorry to hear about the computer, but I do like that you used the opportunity to mess around with something new. Did you find GarageBand made you want to play/create something different? I find it interesting how the tools can have an impact like that sometimes.

Welcome in the world of macusers. I love the handling and the performance of the macbook and imac, but never used garageband. the sound you created here is very good and let me think of joy divisions "love will tear us apart". I am not sure , if you really need a soundlibrary, because you have so many great instrumentations in your songs, that sound unique. Nevertheless, this is a fresh new song.

It is a vague anxiety I always have in the back of my mind about major computer meltdowns, so it does make me happy to know there are backup options.

I can say I probably never would have come up with this particular piece without using GarageBand.  But I didn't come in with any kind of plan.  I was sort of messing around with it to see how it worked and what it could do and just grabbing whatever sounds I found and putting them to use.

Thanks!  I probably won't make a permanent transition to mac because I'm way too used to my PC, but I see why many would like it and it's a good backup option for me.  It was easiest for me to just use the built-in sound library this week since I was just kind of messing around with GarageBand and also I don't think I have all of the connectors I need to hook up my usual setup to the MacBook.

Cool that you were able to adjust and come up with something that you wouldn't have otherwise. I also had to come up with some recently without my usual setup, can make a big difference but sometimes lead to new places. A beautiful dreamy space you've conjured up here.

It's cool how different DAWs can influence new inspiration.  This has a nice 80s sorta nostalgic feel to it. Very cool!

The same sweet CC tunes, but now in a new wrapper

This is a funky change up to your sound. The choir like samples are really cool. Rocking but kind of angelic / new age sound at the same time. Pretty layers of sounds keep stacking on make it really fun.

Always good to have a backup and Garageband is surprisingly powerful.  I use Logic which is the big brother of GB.  What do you usually use for recording?

This piece is so joyful!  I really like all the sound choices & the general vibe - I was feeling some anxiety tonight & this brought the sunshine.  Playing on repeat.  I really enjoy using Garage Band - I keep meaning to try another program but when I upgraded my computer & started playing with the more recent version I've been really enjoying the new features. Glad you got your computer mended & found a fun new tool! smile

This is awesome! Happy grooving song. Love this title too, made me smile. Macs are the best. Garage band is pretty amazing, that AI play along stuff, wow. I use Ableton, but when I peek at Garage band always impressed.

I just noticed another Cairn person here on WB: https://weeklybeats.com/cairn/music/one-beat-per-week---5---i-fear-no-end

Thanks!  Yeah, I don't think it's a bad thing to once in a while have to do something outside your norm.  It can for sure shake things up and take you places you wouldn't have otherwise gone.

I switched over to Reaper from Protools in 2020 and I feel pretty comfortable with it now.  I liked Protools but I bought it in like 2005 and was given one free upgrade on it in like 2007, but after that it seemed like I had to pay full price for new versions.  I stayed on my old version until it decided to stop working and that's when I made the switch to Reaper.  But I liked what I saw of GarageBand, too.

Glad to hear I was able to bring a little sunshine.  That makes me happy.  I've always heard GarageBand was great, but I've always had a PC so never really had a chance to try it out before.  I imagine we get used to the DAWs we use and other ones probably feel slightly strange due to whatever their differences are, but there do seem to be a lot of good options out there and that's good to know.

Thanks!  I wasn't sure what to title it, but that just sort of popped into my head.  I'm sure I barely scratched the surface of what GarageBand can do, but I was impressed for sure.

Hey hey!  More Cairn people!

It's sort of fun to present yourself with a different set of tools sometimes and see what happens.  Thanks!

  You can dress me up different, but it's still me under there!

I think a lot of us recording in the early 2000's got burned by ProTools one too many times with expensive forced upgrades and hardware requirements. Seems to have been a common complaint. I need to check out Reaper.

Lovely little track, this!

Around 2014 or 2015, my laptop broke, and in addition to music-making I also had to teach some undergrads. Due to us being really poor at the time, I also decided to borrow my better half's computer, which is a lot less trivial because I had to take it w/ me to the university, which meant complications. Also, I taught using my own laptop projected, and important to know I taught a computer music class.

My wife delivered the following:
* An account named `husband smile`
* A personalized desktop w/ "love you" type message
* <some other sweet stuff>

Now, most of this I covered up w/ teaching materials, `husband smile` was subtle, and off I went teaching the students. What should have been a red flag is that we're not particularly "sweet stuff" kind of people, so all that stuff was to distract from the real customization scheme: a screen saver that read "ilzxc loves Coldplay" which went over quite well while I was soliloquizing about what frequency domain and FFTs have in common with the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.

Not sure why I felt like sharing but there's no way I'm not submitting after typing all of this up smile

  I was pretty disappointed ProTools didn't at least offer a discount if you had a previous version.  It was expensive the first time I bought it and to expect me to shell out again didn't sit well with me.  One of the best selling points of Reaper for me was it's inexpensive to begin with and they let you try it out for free.  In theory that's supposed to be for 90 days or something, but in practice it's pretty much indefinitely.  I probably used it for free for six months or so before I finally felt guilty and just shelled out the $60 or whatever it was they were asking for.  And they're constantly offering free upgrades to it so there's no reason not to always have the most recent version.

That's a great story!  Love it.  Thanks for sharing.  It sounds like your wife's got a great sense of humor.

Awesome, very cool song.  GarageBand software instrument library is what made me fall in love with production ~15 years ago.

I was for sure impressed by the instrument library.  Lots of choices and some really nice sounds.
